John married Mary Bumpas on 7 Nov 1738 in St. Benet Pauls Wharf, London, ,<br />
Greaterlondon, England. Mary was born in 1717 in Brugge, , Brabant, Belgium and died<br />
before 6 Oct 1744 in Saint Phillips, Barbados.<br />

• Information: 1717, Brugge, , Brabant, Belgium. Mary was the daughter of Jonathan<br />
Bumpas and his wife, Marian Stewart, we could not prove her parents marriage. She<br />
was a spinster aged 21 when she married John <strong>Bryan</strong>. Both parents gave consent to the<br />
marriage. Her father was a merchant of London and Brugge. Several members of the<br />
Bumpas family settled in New England early.<br />
John next married Elizabeth Balzell on 6 Oct 1744 in Saint Phillips, Barbados. Elizabeth was<br />
born in 1720 in Barbados, West Indies and died before 1785 in Richmond County, Virginia.<br />

John <strong>Bryan</strong> on Barbados, we could not porve her maiden name, parents, or her former<br />
husband.<br />
77. Capt. Jonathan <strong>Bryan</strong> (John Sr. (Capt.) 5 , Lewis 4 , John 3 , William (Capt.) 2 ,<br />
John Sr. (Capt.) 1 ) was born in 1724 in Barbados, West Indies and died before 1790 in Wilkes<br />
County, North Carolina.<br />
Noted events in his life were:<br />
• Information: 1724, Barbados, West Indies. Jonathan was certified as Master and Ship<br />
Captain May 1745 when but age 21, but he could not serve as Master until age 26 in<br />
1750. Because he could not hire out in any postition except mate or sailor he joined his<br />
older brother John then located in Richmond County Virginia. Through his brother<br />
Jonathan purchased a plantation in Culpeper County, and it was overseen by John when<br />
Jonathan was at sea. Besides his mariner profession, Jonathan was a merchant. When<br />
his son William married Letty Asher and was aged 21, Jonathan deeded the Culpeper<br />
plantation to him, before removing to North Carolina with their youngest son, Francis.<br />
We could not prove but one son born to Jonathan, one with each wife. More than likely<br />
we are missing children in the ten year gap between his 1st marriage and the birth of<br />
William.<br />
Jonathan married Maria Luther on 17 Jan 1750 in Wimborne Minster, , Dorset, England.<br />
Maria was born in 1729 in Sankt Peter, Kobensharn, Bornholms Amt, Denmark, was<br />
christened on 14 May 1729 in Sankt Peter, Kobensharn, Bornholms Amt, Denmark, and died<br />
in 1765 in Culpeper County, Virginia at age 36.<br />

• Information: 1729, Sankt Peter, Kobensharn, Bornholms Amt, Denmark. Maria was the<br />
daughter of mariner Jurgen Luther and his wife, Susanna Magdalena - Her parents<br />
married in Sweden, we could not prove their marriage, or her mother's maiden name.<br />
Maria's brothers Peter settled in Colleton County South Carolina before she married<br />
