FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BLANEY...
Father’s Day will soon be here. At Sacred Heart Church where I
served, I would pass out a gift to each father. It started out with a
small bottle of whiskey. But, often I got to thinking and seeing several
of the bottles on the shelves of the various homes – unused – I
eventually passed out certificates for a banana split at Dairy Queen.
It was much more appreciated, but the recognition and thanks for a
job well done was the main purpose.
My father enjoyed a good joke, sometimes engineered by him –
sometimes on him. I was fourteen yours old before I realized that all
handkerchiefs didn’t have brown holes through them – the size of
cigarettes that had been deftly put in my father’s back pocket at work
and burning through to the skin. Work & living was interesting and
much of the time – fun.
I am proud to say that I am a chip off the ole block. My father
taught me, and well, that life should be interesting and fun. In fact one
of my nick names is Dennis D’Menace. And so, on this Father’s Day,
I want to give recognition and thanks to my father for a job well done.
Maybe I’ll have his banana split!
I hope that you will have time to remember your father. And tell others of the job well done. Our age
needs positive statements. If you are a father, assess what is rubbing off on your children. Maybe be
thankful for the Father’s Day tie – but also ask what they have learned from you.
All of us need to be thankful for our common – uncommonly Father!
CAMP CORNER
Summer camp is just a few weeks away, beginning on Sunday, June 19 th ! The campers and staff are scheduled, supplies are
purchased and the food is ordered. This summer’s theme is “Getting Along with Each Other” and discussions, activities and the
play will revolve around this idea. Chris Spellman, a student at Notre Dame, will lead the discussions and help plan camp with
veteran camp director, Natalie Missaggia. We are looking forward to seeing all of the campers and staff this summer!
We are still in need of a camp nurse for two weeks of camp! If you or someone you know might be interested, please let us
know! If you have any questions about camp, just call Michelle at 219-778-2585.

THOUGHTS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
By Kathleen Kelly
I was walking through the grounds of Sharing Meadows with one of our long time volunteers and as we
walked we talked about all of the growth we have accomplished. It was just 14 years ago that we launched
our first pledge drive to raise funds to buy the land and once the sale was finalized, we took off running and
haven’t slowed down since!
Soon we were immersed in developing a master plan, constructing the Elias Building for storage and
building the first road. Soon after came the second road, Cidulka Blvd., leading to the Village of St. John
and then our residential program was officially open! Villagers and stewards moved in, vocational training
was developed and the long time dream of a peaceful, loving community was now reality. Next the St.
Timothy Center was built allowing camp to expand to year round and become part of the Sharing Meadows
community. Father Blaney built his retirement home which served the dual purpose of housing Share
Foundation’s offices in the lower level and after the move, we concentrated on building the third road, Mihalo
Blvd. to lead the way to the second village of three homes, the Village of St. Vincent. After the second village
was opened, we added on to the Elias Building to provide a woodshop to expand the vocational training to
keep up with the growing number of villagers. Once that was completed, we moved ahead with construction
of the swimming pool and Smolen Pool House as well as a second storage building to house the additional
equipment we needed to keep up with the maintenance of the grounds.
Members if the Weis family cut the ribbon officially
opening the road.
Our community was growing with
twelve villagers in two villages but we knew
we needed to keep growing to meet the
growing demand of other abled people
who needed our services. Plans were
made to add three more homes and of
course, another road to lead the way.
Despite a few delays that seem to go hand
in hand with construction, the village was
completed and the newest members of our
community moved in last fall. Our joy was
complete when we celebrated the official
dedication of Weis Blvd. and the Village of
St. Theresa.
$1,645,000
$721,000
We scheduled the dedication for the last Sunday in April thinking that the grounds would be in full bloom
and the spring weather would be pleasant. Well, the grounds looked lovely even under the layer of snow
that fell the night before and even though the wind was fierce and the air was cold, our guests had warm
hearts as they gathered to celebrate with us. We began with Father Blaney offering a blessing as members
of the Weis family unveiled the street sign and cut the green ribbon stretched across the road. It was named
in memory of Msgr. Robert Weis and his sister, Josephine Weis, long time supporters of our mission. Once
the ribbon was cut, our crowd of well wishers traveled on Weis Blvd. to the 3 rd village. Father Blaney again
gave a blessing and offered a prayer to St. Theresa as Al and
Theresa Tucker unveiled the sign proudly proclaiming the Village
of St. Theresa. Ribbons across the doors to each home were cut
and our guests were invited inside to enjoy guided tours of the
homes by the villagers and stewards who call it home.
The joy of the day continued at the St. Timothy Center with
food and fellowship hosted by all of the villagers of Sharing
Meadows. It was a long awaited day and one that will be
remembered when we recall the growth of our community. God
bless the Weis family, the Tucker family and all the people who
have helped us accomplish so much! We look forward to
additional growth and accomplishment as we continue to develop
the community of Sharing Meadows.
Al & Theresa Tucker unveiled the sign showing the name of St.
Theresa Village.

I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
As I sat down to write this column concerning philanthropy, I reflected on how best to approach the topic. It didn’t take long for
me to recall the story within the Gospel of Mark concerning the poor widow’s contribution. In this parable, Jesus observed how the
rich placed large sums into the treasury, against a poor widow who placed two small coins, worth only a few cents, into the treasury.
Jesus then called upon his disciples to explain how the wealthy individual’s contributions came from their surplus, while the poor
widow contributed from “her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.” Silent contemplation reminds us all in
different ways the importance of providing for those who need our assistance, and how much greater the reward is when we provide
from the heart.
Philanthropy, as defined by Webster’s Dictionary is the effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind, as by
charitable aid or donations. This ideal of philanthropy is not a new concept, but one that has endured from the time of Plato, when
he provided for an endowment to support his academy for nearly 900 years. When one stops to think of how many individual gifts
have provided the rest of the world gratuitous joys, it becomes awesome in scope; from James Smithson who provided for the
present day Smithsonian Institution within his last will and testament to Andrew Carnegie who built public libraries across the United
States. I might add that Philanthropy in its purest form, to me, construes the idea that an individual gives time, talent or treasure
without a tangible benefit received. In essence, philanthropy is that eternal feeling of doing good, for the benefit of others.
Although there are individuals with great wealth who are recognized for their contributions to society, as the aforementioned
gentlemen, the more important segment is everyone else! Did you know that more than 80% of the funds donated within the United
States are given by individuals who earn $60,000 or less in annual salary? One might think that even then it becomes difficult to
be philanthropic, with the financial tugs of family, medicine, retirement, college savings and the list goes on. When you believe that
you can not provide anything of significance with a few dollars, imagine this scenario within the Share Foundation’s villages. Instead
of going to your local coffeehouse for a $4 cup of joe, you choose to drink from home and place the $3.75 you saved into a can for
the Share Foundation. Now with your $3.75 in savings, this amount could have an impact of 25 pounds of nutritional food from the
food bank or one hour’s worth of vocational training for a villager which in turn produces a product that creates not only
accomplishment but self-sufficiency. These single savings of coffee at home over the coffeehouse could provide over the course of
52 weeks, remember just one less coffee a week, $195 which could provide for so many numerous projects within the villages.
.
Today’s changing system of philanthropy is taking on a new image, not as someone providing millions (which is always a nice
problem to deal with), but instead on individuals like you. In today’s world of instant gratification it becomes difficult, if not impossible
for individuals to donate to charities when they cannot see a tangible result immediately. Here at Sharing Meadows, individuals have
made all the difference and have driven the growth and subsequent successes. It has not been large donations from a select few,
but instead small donations from thousands, which allows our mission to continue for more than 23 years. We are making a
difference in our world one person at a time.
In closing, over the next few months, I will address areas of need here within the Share Foundation. From special events to
endowments to planned giving, I’ll provide the information of how one person can make all the difference for not only the Foundation,
but more importantly for the villagers making this their permanent home. There are a lot of opportunities for individual donors to
make a huge difference in the lives of the villagers here at Sharing Meadows. Quite honestly, without individual donors, the Share
Foundation, nor the Villages, or any of the great work that has been achieved would exist today. The overwhelming majority of our
funds come from individuals like you! So when you reflect on whether one person can make a difference, remember, in the words
of Gandhi, “You must become the change you wish to see in the world.”
