FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BLANEY...
Father’s Day is just around the corner. It comes faster and faster! My father did many things for
me. I remember that we went to many professional wrestling matches. My father thought of being
a professional wrestler in his younger days. And he even trained for it. One night there was a
match in which two wrestlers were very angry and hard on each other. I never saw such great
anger before. After the matches, my father seemed to just be wasting time, standing around. I
wanted to get into the car and maybe stop off for some ice cream on the way home. We stood
around seemingly for no reason. Then out of the wrestler’s dressing room came the two wrestlers
who had shown such anger at each other. They walked past us arm in arm. They got into the same
car and drove away together – long time buddies.
I couldn’t believe it! The anger they exhibited in the ring was just that – an exhibit! My father
knew that I wouldn’t believe him if he told me they were really good buddies and this was just a
show. So he let me see for myself with my own eyes. There were many lessons that my father
taught me mostly by letting me see with my own eyes. God bless him for trusting that I would
figure things out in the right circumstances. He was patient. And the many trips to the ice cream
parlor were mighty good!
God bless all our fathers with much patience and a few trips to the ice cream parlor!
DONATION RECEIVED
Long time Share Foundation supporter Jim Pappas was recently honored by the Catholic Order of Foresters with the Richard Tobin
Benevolence Award. The award comes with a cash prize of $500 that is given to a charity of the honoree’s choice and Jim selected
Share Foundation to receive the donation. Jim came to the office and presented a check to Kathleen Kelly in the amount of $500
to be applied to our capital fund for construction of the next village at Sharing Meadows. This is the second consecutive year Jim
has been recognized with this award and chose Sharing Meadows as the recipient of his winnings. We offer our congratulations
to Jim and our gratitude for his faithful support of our mission!
CAMP ENTERTAINMENT
Calling all performers! As we continue with our plans for summer camp, we are in need of people and groups to come and
entertain our campers. If you sing, dance, play an instrument, do magic or clown around, we want you. We can promise you an
enthusiastic audience who will appreciate your performance and make you glad you came. Call Sandy at 219-778-2585 and she’ll
schedule your performance for a time that is convenient for you.

THOUGHTS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
By Kathleen Kelly
Once June arrives, can summer be far behind? Warmer days, sunny skies, flowers blooming, birds singing and the start of Camp
Sharing Meadows! Camp has always had a special place in my heart because coordinating summer camp was my first
responsibility when I began working for Share Foundation. So many happy memories of camp lift my heart! Camp was there
before the residential program and in fact, was the catalyst for the community of Sharing Meadows. For over 30 years, we have
operated a summer camp filled with great people – campers and staff alike – that have made it so special. While the campers have
certainly enjoyed the weekend mini camps, they look forward to the summer sessions when they can stay for a week. So much
goes into planning for camp: establishing a theme, deciding on crafts and other activities, planning meals, ordering food and
supplies; and the most important aspect of camp, scheduling campers and staff for each week.
Camper applications have been arriving in the daily mail but staff response has been a bit slow. Quite frankly, I’m worried. Camp
begins shortly and we are in need of more people to volunteer to serve on our staff. We need a few nurses, cooks and camp
counselors. Camp is a joyful, meaningful experience that will truly change your life as you change the lives of our participants.
Nurses dispense medications and provide first aid if necessary and have time to join in the activities along with the campers. Cooks
prepare meals in a commercial kitchen with all the comforts of home and the best part is that the menus are planned, the food has
been purchased and the villagers take care of clean up! Camp counselors provide companionship and mentoring to a few other
abled individuals while participating in the values sessions, making crafts, playing games, fishing, swimming, dancing and acting
in a musical production right along with their campers.
Please consider joining us for a summer that will enrich your life. Camp runs for six consecutive weeks – from Sunday afternoon
to Friday afternoon - beginning June 12 and ending on July 17. Come for one week or all six! Give Sandy Furman a call at 219-
778-2585 and she will give you more specific information about camp. Over thirty years of camp and it gets better each year.
Come see for yourself how truly special summer can be. Sandy is waiting for your call! Let the camping season begin!
BLACK WALNUT RECIPE
Editor’s note: From time to time we will feature recipes that use black walnuts so you can enjoy the flavorful nuts the villagers
harvest each year from the trees on the grounds of Sharing Meadows
2 cups sugar
1 cup oil
4 eggs
1 teaspoon soda
3 cups flour
1 can of Milnot
1 can of almond filling
1 cup of chopped black walnuts
Notre Dame Cake
Beat together sugar and oil. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each one. Add soda with flour, alternating with Milnot.
Add almond filling and nuts, mixing well. Bake in greased tube or bundt pan at 350 degrees for one to one and a half hours. Test
for doneness with toothpick. Let cool.
Dust with powdered sugar and sprinkle additional nuts on top.
VOLUNEERS WANTED
We are looking for a few people with a little time on their hands. Margaret Jones, affectionately known as the “Weaving Lady”
around Sharing Meadows, is looking for some helpers. Help with things like knotting rugs after they have been woven; cutting
and sewing some of the materials that are used in the making of rugs; and sewing some hems on dishtowels. Also, we could use
a donation of cotton or cotton blend materials.
This wouldn’t be a regular weekly job. We would work on as “as needed” basis. It will depend on where our volunteers are coming
from as to where we would gather to work. We could work at Sharing Meadows or in Margaret’s home in Munster. If you have
a little time, please call Margaret at 219-923-9095 and let her know. This won’t happen until fall so you have some time to think
about it……..but don’t wait too long……you might forget to call!

SPRING LUNCHEON EXTRAORDINAIRE
Father Blaney visits with our guests
The sun was shining, the sky was blue and it was a perfect day to
celebrate spring as we welcomed over 880 guests to the 20 th
annual Spring Luncheon last month. This event is organized by
members of the Service League and each woman helps by baking
dozens of cookies, collecting table prizes, selling tickets, creating
beautiful giveaway baskets, inflating 300 balloons, decorating
the tables with spring plants and recruiting friends and family to
help at this event. Chairwoman Emogene Grant presided at
planning meetings beginning early in January. Some League
members have selflessly been working on this luncheon for all of Judy Gresko delivers a prize
20 years. To watch them prepare for the arrival of guests in the to a happy winner
early morning is like watching, as one volunteer stated, an
incredible beehive of activity. Everyone had a job to do, everyone was busy doing it.
Harriet Szafranski celebrated her
birthday at the luncheon
Father Blaney and Kathleen Kelly spoke of the progress that
has been made at Sharing Meadows thanks to the funds raised
by the Luncheon. The villagers entertained with a dance
routine that included a finale of thanking our guests by dancing
to the popular song, “Because You Loved Me.” The food was
delicious, conversations lively and the prizes were plentiful. A
good time was had by all in attendance. Heartfelt thanks to all
of the ladies who worked to hard to ensure a successful day.
We love our Service League volunteers!
Lovely ladies!
LEPRECHAUN HUNT
This year’s Leprechaun Hunt, to be held Sunday, August 7 th , will feature four additional leprechauns waiting for you to find somewhere on the 185 acres
of Sharing Meadows. What will be familiar to those who have joined us before is all of the delicious food offered by our guest chefs – Philippe Joseph,
Bruce Ruge and Ed Kis — and their hardworking crews. All you care to eat barbequed ribs, chicken, sausage, pulled pork, corned beef, hot dogs,
hamburgers, tacos, nachos, and salads will be served. Fresh roasted corn dipped in butter and vegetable side dishes will also be available. Water & soft
drinks will be plentiful, as well as wine & beer for the adults. All of the food, beverages and entertainment are included in the cost of your ticket. The
advance entrance fee remains the same as last year, $40 ($35 for seniors 65+). This year to accommodate the rising cost of food and supplies, children
13 and under accompanied by their parents and grandparents will be admitted free. Everyone over the age of 13 must purchase a ticket. Tickets
purchased after Friday, August 5 th at 5:00 pm or at the gate on the day of the hunt will be an additional $10. If purchased by Friday, August 5 th , all major
credit cards may be used for ticket payments.
For our friends who have never been to a Hunt, be ready for an outstanding family day. In addition to the wonderfully delicious food and drink, there
are hayrides around the property, fishing, boating, moonwalks, other children’s games, snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy. Under the big tent from
noon to the 6:00 pm closing, continuous Irish entertainment will be performed for your listening pleasure. The popular groups New Element, the
Ploughboys (of Chicago) and the Doolin Clan will perform. Also the Villagers are looking forward to dancing a jig or two as well.
When Father Blaney blows his horn at noon, be ready to charge through hill and dale in search of those elusive leprechauns that when found will bring
you a pot of gold worth from $50 to $1,500 (one per family, please). It is a time to enjoy the natural beauty of the place we call Sharing Meadows.
Please call Marty & Joan Collins (219-972-2158), Bill & Anne Franz (219-662-1536), Nancy Nordmann (219-663- 5618), Mike & Sheila Clancy (312-
MEMORIALS
Memorials are a special way to
honor the memory of a loved one or
celebrate a special occasion for
ourselves, our family, or our friends.
We are grateful for all memorial
donations, large and small, that are
received but we want to remind you
that our policy is that thank you letters
and acknowledgement cards are not
sent for any memorials received that
are less than $10.00 per name. They
will be printed in the GOOD NEWS
but no cards or letters will be sent.
Due to the increasing cost of paper,
postage and time to send cards and
letters, it is not good stewardship to
spend the donations you have
entrusted to us to fill mailboxes with
mail.
Memorial donations of $10.00 or
more per name will continue to be
handled with a thank you letter,
acknowledgement to family and
listing in the newsletter. If you do not
require a thank you letter, please mark
the envelope so that we can code your
account and we can save the cost of a
letter and use the funds for our
programs for other abled people.
Thank you for your understanding!
MEMORIAL
DEADLINE
Just a friendly reminder that all
memorials are due by the 15 th of each
month in order to be printed in the
following month’s GOOD NEWS.
For example, if you want to have a
memorial printed in the July issue,
your memorial needs to arrive in our
office by June 15 th . Share Foundation
has a deadline to meet as well with
our printer and if we do not have your
memorial by the 15 th of each month,
your memorial will be delayed an
additional month. Thank you for your
understanding!
