NEWSLETTER FOR THE OTHER ABLED
JULY 2011 219-778-2585 VOLUME 37 #9
share@sharefoundation.org
FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BLANEY...
Fishing is a lot of fun! I’ve been fishing in June on a lake in Canada called God’s Lake. And it
truly is heavenly including the people who run God’s Lake Narrows Lodge – the Healey’s. I’ve
been going up to God’s Lake each year for 40 years. There is still a thrill when the fish bites your
hook and the fight is on. And a greater thrill when your lure is more luring than your partner’s
lure. Or, if you’re both using the same lure, but yours is definitely doing better than your partner’s.
This may sound a bit strange but I know that certain partners who will remain anonymous, have
secretly spit on my lure, causing it to lose its lureness.
Fishing is a lot of fun! Especially when the area is so beautiful. This year I must have seen twenty
eagles – some on their nests. And the hospitality of the Healeys is fantastic. They just can’t do
enough for their guests! There were also lots of fish stories at the supper table. There’s the story
of the fish that took the lure and never stopped – all the line ran out and the line broke from the
reel – maybe it’s still running.
We had a fishing derby at Sharing Meadows on Memorial Day. Sister Tukuza was easily, hands
down champion of the stewards. And Keith Van Sickle was the villager with the most fish caught.
There will be lots more contests. Fishing is a lot of fun!
THOUGHTS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
By Kathleen Kelly
Don’t we all look forward to the arrival of summer? I can remember being raring to go on the last day of school so I could
play all day with my siblings and friends. We’d ride bikes, play baseball, climb trees and beg Mom to let us eat our lunch
outside just like a picnic. Summer was a great time when I was growing up and later, when my children were growing up I
once again eagerly awaited our summer activities – picking blueberries, trips to the beach for cooling off in the refreshing
waters of Lake Michigan and digging in the sand. It seemed like no matter how many times I cleaned, the house always had
a fine layer of sand but that was part of summer’s charm. My children loved the outdoors always asking for five more
minutes outside and insisting that it wasn’t too dark to play. Each year we planned special events and excursions to make
the summer special and they were always eagerly anticipated!
Share Foundation’s Leprechaun Hunt© has become a summer tradition that many families look forward to each year.
Sunday, August 7 th is the date for the 17 th annual Leprechaun Hunt© and we have another outstanding day planned for you
and your family and friends. Thousands of people will gather – some families with four generations – to enjoy delicious
food, delightful entertainment and celebrate being together.
The day’s activities are all family centered. There’s 185 acres of grounds to explore and while you’re at it, keep your eyes
open for a leprechaun hiding somewhere on the land to claim his pot of gold. This year there will be 33 leprechauns just
waiting to be discovered. If you don’t feel like walking, there’s hay wagons – tractor powered and horse drawn – waiting to
take you on a tour of the beautiful grounds of Sharing Meadows and it’s been reported that some guests ask to hop off the
wagon when they spot a leprechaun! Games will be available for our wee guests and since their energy level is enviable,
they can bounce to their heart’s delight in the Moonwalk. Boating and fishing is available on majestic Tucker Lake with a
chance to win a prize of $200 if you catch the tagged fish! Irish music will fill the air all day with sounds from New Element,
the Ploughboys and Kevin Doolin and his lovely daughter, Colleen Doolin Lustina. Our own villagers will entertain you with
the Irish jig. You can bring your own chairs if you like or sit in the shade under our large tent to listen to the sounds of music,
singing and dancing while you enjoy a bountiful array of food and beverages.
Speaking of food and beverages, the cuisine served at the Leprechaun Hunt© is the best! Chef Philippe Joseph and his
assistants will cook up a feast of barbecued ribs, chicken, and sausage along with tasty side dishes. Chef Bruce Ruge will
serve his ever popular pulled pork, hamburgers and hot dogs. Chef Ed Kis will be on hand serving tacos, nachos and corned
beef and cabbage with all the trimmings. No summer feast is complete without roasted sweet corn and Marcia Forcey along
with her crew affectionately knows as “Chuck’s Shuckers,” will serve you the sweetest you’ve ever tasted complete with
melted butter. Dessert will be zucchini bread baked by the residents of Sharing Meadows and topped with fresh berries and
whipped cream. Yummy!! You can wash it all down with your favorite soft drink, beer or wine. We will have cotton candy,
snow cones and popcorn for the kids or the kid at heart. Food is served all day and, with four food stations, the wait will be
minimal.
The Leprechaun Hunt© is an outstanding family fun day and one you won’t want to miss. If you’re an experienced hunter,
you know what a delightful experience it is and if you’ve never been a part of the festivities, now is the time to begin. Gather
your loved ones and join us on Sunday, August 7, 2011 at Sharing Meadows. The gate opens at 11:00 am to give you time
to park the car and get ready for the start of the festivities at noon. Admission is $40 in advance, $50 at the gate with seniors
(65+) $35 in advance, $45 at the gate. Money must be received in our office by Friday, August 5 th to qualify for the advanced
sale price. By purchasing your ticket in advance you will save $10 per ticket and avoid waiting in line to enter the grounds
the day of the hunt. Your ticket entitles you to enjoy all of the food, beverages, entertainment and activities of the day plus
you can hunt for one of the elusive leprechauns with the chance to win a pot of gold valued from $50 to $1500! Since this
is a day for families, kids 13 and under are FREE when accompanied by a parent or grandparent. Tickets have been mailed
to past attendees but if you didn’t receive them or you need more, call the office at 219-778-2585 and we will be happy to
send them to you. Have a special summer day with your family close to home (and save gasoline) at the 17 th annual
Leprechaun Hunt© on Sunday, August, 7 th . We promise you a wonderful summer day your family will long remember!

COME ONE, COME ALL TO THE LEPREHAUN HUNT
It’s that time of year again to gather up your family and friends and come
to Sharing Meadows for the 17 th annual Leprechaun Hunt© on Sunday,
August 7 th ! Advance ticket sales have been brisk so we’re planning for
a record breaking crowd and you’ll want to be part of it. The gate opens
at 11:00 a.m. and the festivities run from noon until 6:00 p.m.
“I found a Leprechaun”
We’ve kept the price of admission the same as last year with one
important change – children 13 and under will be admitted free
when accompanied by their parents or grandparents. In past years,
children 17 and under were free but with rising food prices, this change
was necessary to keep from raising the ticket price. Everyone 14 and
older will need to purchase a ticket. Prices are $40 in advance, $50 at
the gate and seniors 65+ are $35 in advance, $45 at the gate.
Father Blaney blows the horn to start
the hunt
We’ve added four leprechauns to the gang so there will be 33 leprechauns hidden around the splendid
grounds of Sharing Meadows just waiting for you to discover
his hiding place. Find one and claim his pot of gold – from
$50 all the way to $1500!
A wee fisherman tries to catch the
tagged fish
The price of your ticket is all inclusive – you can enjoy a
bounteous selection of food, listen to lively Irish music all
day, take a hayride around the land, fish in beautiful Tucker
Lake and of course, hunt for leprechauns each with a pot of
gold. Catch the tagged fish swimming in Tucker Lake and
claim your prize of $200! If you just want to enjoy the
serenity of the lake, take a boat ride. We have a large pontoon
boat that will hold a dozen guests or rowboats for two or
three. If you want a bit of exercise, use one of the paddle
boats and peddle your way around the water.
Many beautiful families enjoy the day
All of the above activities – leprechaun hunting, fishing, boating, hayriding etc. – can be enjoyed once you’ve had your fill of the delicious
food that is available. If you like barbecued food we have ribs, chicken and sausage; pulled pork diners, hamburgers and hot dogs are also
on the menu along with tacos, nachos and sweet corn. No Irish feast is complete without corned beef and cabbage so you’ll find that too!
Everyone who comes to the Leprechaun Hunt© raves about the food and rave they should because our
chefs – Philippe Joseph, Bruce Ruge and Ed Kis – are the finest in the
Midwest! You can fill your plate with your favorite foods, find a seat in
the large tent and enjoy the musical talents of New Element, The
Ploughboys and the Doolin Clan while you eat and visit with your friends.
The Villagers of Sharing Meadows will entertain with an Irish dance and
a live auction will feature some unique items for bidding.
Chuck’s Shuckers will be serving
sweet corn
The Villagers have been hard at work preparing the grounds of Sharing
Meadows and they look forward to welcoming you to their community.
Booths will be sent up offering items made by the Villagers in their
vocational training program. They are proud of the woven rugs, wood
items, mosaics, ceramics and wine bottle lamps they made and will be
happy to show them to you. Lovely potted grasses and day lilies will be in our garden booth to beautify
your yard and serve as a remembrance of the day.
Hunting for a leprechaun
From our first efforts in 1995, the Leprechaun Hunt© has grown both in size and popularity. We are
looking for the finest event ever this year and we want you to join us so we can show you the best time
of your summer! If you need tickets, call the office at 219-778-2585 and we’ll be happy to send them
to you. Purchase your tickets by Friday, August 5 th and you will save $10 on each ticket. For advance
sales, we accept all major credit cards but at the gate we only accept cash and checks.
Father Blaney awards a pot of gold to a
happy hunter
Keep in mind that when you come to the
Leprechaun Hunt© you’re not just
supporting a cause, you’re supporting
people. Funds raised will help support the
residential program at Sharing Meadows
to continue to provide a safe, loving home
for our villagers. Let them welcome you
on Sunday, August 7 th and give you a
memorable family fun day! Hidden
LEPRECHAUN HUNT© VOLUNTEERS
Join in the fun and give us a hand to help make the Leprechaun Hunt© another great day! We need lots of volunteers who are
willing to give 2 hours of their time helping in a variety of ways. Our volunteers find that it makes the day more special to be
involved in the Leprechaun Hunt© and have lots of fun interacting with the other guests. We need people to sell crafts made by
the villagers, serve food, pour soft drinks, clear tables, park cars or sell tickets. Be part of a winning team and make a difference!
Call the Share Foundation office at 219-778-2585 and let us know what shift you can help. The Leprechaun Hunt© will be even
more enjoyable!
