FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BLANEY...
Thanksgiving Day will soon be here. I reflect back to a Thanksgiving
in which I ate heartily and took a walk around the block with another
person. We saw several pumpkins on porches. I mentioned that I felt like
a pumpkin – quite rotund. And afterwards, I reflected on the life of a
pumpkin. A pumpkin has as a purpose, taking up space, and with a hard
shell and is empty on the inside. We are a lot like that in some ways.
When we are “thumped,” our hard shell protects us but we are obviously
hollow. We, like the pumpkin, would like to be “thee” pumpkin at the
harvest festival or maybe the cute pumpkin chosen by the priest to rest
near the altar these days but in reality we are dumped in the food basket
given to a poor family at Thanksgiving.
One day as I was in our woods with a villager I held up an acorn and
asked the villager what this was. He had no idea. I said that it can
become a mighty oak tree through a transformation. And then I thought
of the story of Cinderella. She really wanted to go to the Great Ball. And
there was a transformation – In fact a lowly pumpkin became a golden
coach! That was a big transformation. Imagine the genuine fulfillment of the pumpkin bringing someone to the
Great Ball. And imagine the sheer joy of Cinderella being fitted with the glass slipper by the Prince of Peace.
She then would realize her absolute uniqueness in all the world. She truly made a difference in the world. She
didn’t just take up space and wasn’t hollow on the inside. She had a great purpose!
Out here in Sharing Meadows there are pumpkins who have been “passed by” by many people. And yet they
want to go to the Great Banquet. There is a big transformation occurring. The people are becoming more loving
and thoughtful. This Thanksgiving time I am especially thankful for that transformation that is happening and all
of the generous people who are making it possible. God bless you all!
29 YEARS OF
GOOD NEWS!
The Good News is celebrating its 29 th
birthday this month! A lot has changed
since the newsletter first started going out,
but the purpose of the newsletter remains the
same; to spread information about programs
available for other-abled adults and their
families. With a circulation of just over
10,000 people, more readers than ever
before are enjoying the Share Foundation’s
Good News every month. If you have any
friends or family whom you feel would like
reading the Good News, feel free to call the
NOVEMBER MINI-CAMP
Responsibility to Thank God
The theme for November’s mini-camp is our responsibility to thank God for all
that he has given us. The other fall mini-camp themes, “responsibility to ourselves”
and “responsibility to our families,” will compliment November’s theme and in turn
lead to December’s theme of our “responsibility to do for others.” For the campers,
the repetition of responsibility is becoming understood on a deeper level than themes
have been received in the past. Even those campers who are only able to attend one
mini-camp this season will benefit from the seriousness in which the theme is
approached during group discussions, prayers and even through arts and crafts.
Thank you to those campers who have come to Camp Sharing Meadows with their
minds open to God’s word and their hearts open to share thoughts and feelings with
others. The remaining Mini-camps in Fall 2003 are scheduled for November 14 – 16
and December 12 – 14. If you would like more information about Camp Sharing
Meadows, please contact Michelle in the office at 219.778.2585.

THOUGHTS FROM THE EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
By Kathleen Kelly
The grounds of Sharing Meadows are especially beautiful in the autumn.
Thousands of trees are ablaze with color, the mums are in full bloom, the blue sky is
vibrant and the air is crisp and invigorating. It’s a great time to be outside and revel
in the splendor of the world God created for us. There is so much to be thankful for!
The Villagers are hard at work harvesting black walnuts, making raspberry
applesauce and preparing the grounds for winter. Witnessing their growth and
accomplishments makes me realize how blessed they are to live in this community.
Once again, there is so much to be thankful for, especially for the stewards who guide
and encourage their growth. God has truly blessed us with good people who
unselfishly give of themselves in service to our Villagers. When the residential
program began nine years ago, we knew that finding the right stewards would be the
greatest challenge of all. While at times we have struggled with this challenge,
overall God has blessed us with a good number of caring people and we are grateful
for the stewards who have been inspired to join our community.
Our current stewards form a team that works like a well-oiled machine. Joe, who
is from upstate New York, oversees Gary and Tom in house A and is in his fourth year
of service to Share Foundation. Daler hails from Texas originally but now calls
Sharing Meadows home, more specifically house B where she just began her second
year of nurturing Dawn and Aimee. Kara, who also comes from Texas, recently
graduated from Notre Dame University and chose to spend a year in volunteer service
before going on to grad school. She resides in house C encouraging Tina and Kim to
learn and grow. Jeff, the only steward who comes from Indiana, graduated from
Indiana University in August with a degree in education and came to Sharing
Meadows to gain experience before embarking on a career in teaching. He shares
house D with Bob and Craig, providing companionship and teaching valuable life
skills to foster their independence. Marshall and Elaine, who came to us from
Wisconsin, retired early to be able to spend their time in service to others and they are
currently in their second year at Sharing Meadows. They reside in house E with
Christine and Becky, where Elaine is a great role model for the ladies in her role as
steward of the home while Marshall teaches woodworking skills to the Villagers
during their vocational training. Mike, who comes from New Jersey, is also a Notre
Dame graduate who elected to do a year of volunteer service before he goes on to
grad school so now he sees to the needs of Craig and Ron in house F.
These seven people comprise a great team for the Villagers of Sharing Meadows.
Their dedication, compassion and altruism is commendable. To see them work
together - in spite of their differences in age, interests or experiences - for the good
of the Villagers is remarkable. To see the Villagers thrive under their direction is
heartwarming. God has truly blessed us and there is much to be thankful for. This
Thanksgiving season, my prayer of thanks will include a special one for the good
people whose dedication to others enriches the lives of our Villagers – the stewards
of Sharing Meadows.
HAPPY
THANKSGIVING
The Share Foundation would like to
wish each of you a happy Thanksgiving.
There is much to be thankful for here at
Sharing Meadows and in all of our lives. We
are thankful for your support and generosity
that make our programs possible. Have a
great holiday!
SPECIAL VISITORS
The Villagers have welcomed several
youth groups into Sharing Meadows
recently. A group of 7 th and 8 th graders from
Queen of All Saints, led by Sandy Furman,
traveled from Michigan City to Rolling
Prairie in September for an afternoon of
swimming, games, snacking and socializing.
The weather complied and it turned out to be
a sunny, warm day. Furman, who has
brought groups to Sharing Meadows in the
past, feels that the student’s memories of
their time spent getting to know the Villagers
will stay with them for many years to come.
In hopes of perpetuating attitudes of
acceptance and tolerance of all people,
Queen of All Saints and the Share
Foundation are setting up a permanent
schedule of activities for the students and the
Villagers.
With the same goals in mind, the La
Lumiere school has developed a similar
schedule of activities for students to interact
with the Villagers. Where the Queen of All
Saints students are coming to Sharing
Meadows for social activities, a group of
around 15 La Lumiere students come to
work alongside the Villagers during their
normal workday. The tasks include raking
leaves, folding newsletters and creating a
path through the woods. Partnerships with
Queen of All Saints and La Lumiere have
enriched the lives of both the students and
the Villagers.
PLANNED GIVING CENTER
Charitable Remainder Trusts—Part One: Just How Do They Work?
In this column we have attempted to encourage you to think about planned giving through various vehicles: bequests, life
insurance plans, retirement plans, and charitable remainder trusts. In doing so, we have defined these vehicles and touched on some
of the tax and other estate planning benefits in an effort to help you decide which of these gift options might be right for you and
your family. Over the next few months, we would like to show you that planned giving is a 2-way street. In many instances, making
a planned gift to the Share Foundation will help you to support the other-abled for eternity, while also assuring that you have made
sound financial decisions that affect you during your retirement years and your family for years to come.
Although there are a number of trusts, let’s concentrate on just one: charitable remainder unitrusts. A charitable remainder
unitrust is designed to receive a person’s assets and make variable lifetime annual payments equal to a percentage of the fair
market value of trust assets, determined annually. There are three types of charitable remainder unitrusts: (1) a straight unitrust
which pays a minimum of 5 percent of the fair market value of the assets determined annually to the beneficiaries; (2) net-incomeonly
unitrusts which pay all the income earned up to the amount stated in the trust and cannot exceed more than the stated
percentage in any given year; and (3) net-income-plus-makeup unitrusts which provide more income for the beneficiary when the
earnings are higher than the stated percentage amount. This net-income-plus-makeup trust allows beneficiaries to “make up” for
any deficiencies in income received in past or future years.
Consider this example of a retired donor considering a planned gift through a Charitable Remainder Unitrust:
Situation:
Solution:
Mr. Bennett is 65 years old, owns a small business and wants to make a gift to the Share Foundation; however,
Mr. Bennett wants to structure his gift in such a way as to receive income for the rest of his life. His small
business nets approximately $6,000 a year. He would like to increase his income and has considered selling his
business. Ultimately, he has decided not to sell because he would be hit with large capital-gains tax.
Mr. Bennett could transfer the business into a net income charitable remainder unitrust with Share Foundation
as the charitable remainder beneficiary. That way, if the trustee is fortunate enough to sell the business, let’s say
for $150,000 and reinvest the proceeds then each year the trustee will pay a percentage of the net fair market
value of the trust assets, determined annually, to Mr. Bennett.
Benefits:
• The total fair market value of the $150,000 trust at the end of the first year generates an increase in first
year income. (At 6%, that would generate $9,750 or a $3750 increase over previous years.)
• Mr. Bennett was able to make a substantial deferred gift to Share Foundation
• Mr. Bennett was able to avoid capital-gains tax
* Mr. Bennett received an income-tax deduction
• Mr. Bennett received an increased life income that also may be eligible for subsequent favorable tax
breaks in coming years
• Share Foundation is able to continue operating its programs and services for the other-abled with the
knowledge of Mr. Bennett’s substantial deferred gift!
Charitable remainder unitrusts are a win-win situation. We encourage you to consult your financial planner or tax adviser when
making decisions regarding your investments and estate plan.
