NEWSLETTER FOR THE OTHER ABLED
JUNE 2004 219-778-2585 VOLUME 30 #8
FROM THE DESK OF
FATHER BLANEY...
My father loved mathematics. His father died when my father was quite
young. There wasn’t any social security or death benefits in those days. My
father had to go to work and I don’t think he even finished eighth grade. But
he loved mathematics. I miss him! Happy Fathers Day!
I’ve acquired a bit of a knack with figures meself. Just now we are
entirely debt free, with just over 2 million dollars in assets. And the plans at
Sharing Meadows are to double our residential capacity in four years. Many
people have started to apply to live at Sharing Meadows. Parents of other
abled people need support in their situations. This year we will build the 3 rd
village of three homes. We will also build a guesthouse so parents and their
other abled children could come – join our Villagers – and come away with
hope. This year there will be construction costs of close to $700,000. In four
years, with the construction of 3 more homes – 4 th Village – there will be a
need of $417,000. We are not able to dig up that kind of monies from our
normal fund raising activities. This will probably be the last great effort. We
have applied for several grants that, if we get them, will be a big help. So we
have started a Capital Campaign Drive for $1,645,000 over 4 years. The 3 rd
village has not been named yet so a naming opportunity exists for the donor
who pledges a minimum of $100,000 to be paid over the next four years. A
good part of the drive will be to enhance our Endowment Fund. A stable
source of continuing support is absolutely needed as we develop more
homes at Sharing Meadows. The Endowment Fund would provide support
only from the interest not the principal. And so, a gift to the Capital Fund
Drive, earmarked to the Endowment Fund, would be a gift in perpetuity. This
is a very ambitious effort. Believe me, it is matched by the needs!
We have already received a $50,000 donation from a western college. I
personally am pledging $10,000 over four years. A copy of a pledge card can
be found in this issue. Just cut it out and mail it into the office. Your support will help us continue the dream at Sharing Meadows
CAMP SHARING MEADOWS: SUMMER 2004
Summer camp will be starting at Sharing Meadows in the next few days! Campers and staff are excited to spend part of their
summer with friends. There are still ways for you to get involved with camp! At night and in the afternoon campers and staff
welcome various entertainers to camp for an hour-long performance. Each person has a variety of talents from singing to playing
a musical instrument to literally clowning around! You don’t have to be a professional, just the desire to share your talents with a
captive audience.
There is also the opportunity to spend an entire week at camp as a counselor. Not only are counselors caregivers; they are
friends, encouragers, supporters and much more! Counselors participate in all of the camp activities alongside the campers. We
will have campfires, go boating, swim in the pool, create crafts, dance, sing and make friends that will last a lifetime. Consider
spending part of your summer with our special campers. They will touch your life with their smiling faces and open hearts. To signup,
please call Michelle today at 219-778-2585.
THOUGHTS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
By Kathleen Kelly
This time of year, Father’s Day is evident in each store I enter. Racks of cards and signs on various displays suggesting
appropriate gifts remind us to honor our fathers on this special day. Being surrounded by the hype gives me a twinge of sadness
since my father went to his heavenly reward nearly 10 years ago. I cannot buy him a gift or share the day with him but amidst that
sadness is the joy of so many happy memories of him.
Dad was a kind, gentle man who spoke softly but with wisdom and humor. He taught me love and compassion by his example
and nurtured me into the person I am today. He instilled values in me and helped me make good decisions and, when I chose to
make a decision that wasn’t so good, rather than judging me, he loved me unconditionally, taught me to accept the consequences
and encouraged me to do whatever it took to rectify my mistake and make it better.
I am reminded of my Dad when I see the stewards interacting with the villagers at Sharing Meadows. The stewards are kind,
compassionate people who serve the villagers as teachers, mentors and friends. In sharing living space, and working, eating and
playing together, they develop strong bonds of trust and love. Most stewards realize that, in sharing with the villagers, they receive
so much more in return. Their own lives are fulfilled and enriched by their experience at Sharing Meadows.
We are in the process of building another village at Sharing Meadows with occupancy expected later this summer. Additional
stewards are needed and I invite you to consider sharing your time and talents with us. Being a steward allows you to share in our
special community as you work alongside other dedicated people, realizing you are truly making a difference in the lives of our
villagers.
Stewards come in all ages and backgrounds from recent college grads to retired people who have energy and so much
knowledge to share. Empty nesters, this could be the perfect opportunity to nurture, guide and serve as a role model. The houses
at Sharing Meadows are comfortable, three bedroom homes that are ideal for either a single steward or a married couple. Room
and board is provided, along with a salary, health insurance, two days off each week on a rotating basis, four weeks of paid vacation
each year coinciding with Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and a bonus after each completed year of service. A retired couple
could live in the home, spend days off engaging in activities with family and friends, and even entertain their family as houseguests
during the holidays when the villagers are visiting with their families. It would be a great way to get out from under rising property
taxes and escalating maintenance costs while still enjoying the privacy of a home in beautiful surroundings. A recent college grad
could gain some valuable life experience, achieve personal growth, and end the year with a nice nest egg. More importantly, you
would have the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped another person become the person God created them to be just by
your presence in their lives.
Father Blaney has always told me that Sharing Meadows is a success because we are doing what God wants us to do. Our
stewards are happy and fulfilled because they, too, are doing what God wants them to do. Perhaps God wants you to take
advantage of this opportunity or perhaps you know of someone who could find great personal satisfaction by spending a year or
two at Sharing Meadows. Think about it, discuss it with your family, and pray to God for guidance. If you want to step forward to
join our peaceful, Christian community, give me a call. I’ll be praying, too, as I wait to hear from you!
PLANNED GIVING CENTER
We have discussed many of the specifics with regard to writing your will—types of bequests, sample language for making
bequests, and so on. But even if you have made the big decision to leave a bequest in your will, executing your will properly still
depends on the details. The mini-checklists below will help you put the smaller details in order before talking to your attorney or
financial planner.
Choosing an Executor
• Your executor should be both someone you can trust and someone who is fiscally responsible
• Most married people name their spouse as the primary executor
• If you are married, your spouse should consider having the same guardian(s) in his/her will
• Think carefully before you appoint joint guardians or joint executors. These individuals must always act together. This can
become a difficult situation if they become estranged for any reason. For example, a sister divorces after you’ve named both
the sister and brother-in-law as the guardians. Simply naming the sister as the guardian avoids this potential problem
• Choose an alternate guardian or executor because the first person (usually the spouse) you choose may die before you, or be
unable to take on the responsibility
Making a Bequest
• Notify the individuals, ahead of time, that you plan to list them as executors, guardians, or beneficiaries. Although an
individual may be a great friend or a close family member, he or she may not want the responsibility of being an
executor or a guardian
• If you want to make any specific bequests in your will, describe the item in as much detail as possible. For example, with
a financial account, you would want to list the type, account number, owner, institution (address), and value
• To make a bequest to a charitable organization, be sure to include the organization’s full legal name and address. For example:
“ [Description of bequest…] to Share Foundation with the Handicapped, Inc., P.O. Box 400, Rolling Prairie, IN 46371-0400.”
Proofread Carefully
• SPELLING: Please double check the spelling of the peoples’ names you have selected as beneficiaries, personal
representatives, guardians, trustees, etc.
• ADDRESSES: Make sure that you have the most current addresses and phone numbers for the above-mentioned individuals
