1.5.5 Definitions of Some Important Terms Used in the Report
Some terms are repeatedly used in the report, for example, effects of biogas, impacts of biogas, logical
production of biogas, efficiency of biogas plants etc. The definitions of such important terms have been
described here.
a) Effect of biogas means the immediate results that are felt or experienced in shorter period of time, for
example, time saved in cooking.
b) Impact is the results that are felt of experienced in long run. for example, saving of forest due to
installation of biogas.
c) Efficiency of biogas plant is the measure of the actual output of plant as against the theoretical output
expected. For example, a plant of 10 cubic metre capacity is expected to produce 2400 litres of gas per day
and if it produces 1200 litres only, the efficiency would be 50%. In this case, the efficiency of biogas plant
has been calculated on the basis of the quantity of biogas being used.
d) Theoretical value of gas production (TV) is the amount of gas expected from biogas plant. This value is
taken to be 40 litres of gas from 1 kg of dung fed in the plant and the required feeding is taken as 6 kg of
dung per cubic metre of plant capacity.
e) Logical gas production from a biogas plant is based upon plant size and the feeding. For example, if a
plant of 10 cub m capacity is told to have fed with 90 kgs of dug per day although the required quantity of
feeding is 60 kg only, instead of producing 3600 (90x40) litres of gas per day, it is assumed to produce a
maximum of 2400 (60x40) litres of gas per day - which is the logical production,
1.6 The Companies
As mentioned earlier, the sampled plant were among those constructed by NGG, NRG and PGG. A brief
description of these companies are given hereafter.
1.6.1 Nepal Gobar Gas Bistar tatha Bikas Company Ltd. (NGG)
NGG was established during the fiscal year 2049/50 as a private limited company to provide biogas related
services to the fanners in Lamjung, Tanahu and Gorkha districts in Gandaki zone. The company has its head
office in Dumre Bazaar in Tanahu. At present the company has a company office in Bharatpur. Chitwan; branch
office in Thanti Pokhari, Gorkha. The company has till the end of July, 1996 constructed 787 biogas plants in
the above mentioned three districts since its establishment. NGG has set a target of constructing some 700 plants
during this running fiscal year. It was also reported that the company is planning to extend its services in
Dhawalagiri and Lumbini zones in the near future.
1.6.2 Nepal Rastriya Gobar Gas Company Pvt. Ltd. (NRG)
NRG was established in August 1994 (Bhadra 2051 B.S.) with a view to provide biogas plant construction and
other related services to the potential farmers especially in Syangja district in Gandaki Zone. The head office
located in Syangja bazaar, a branch office in Dulegauda, Tanahu and three satellite offices each in Waling in
Syangja, Hemja in Kaski and Chapakot in Syangja are at present implementing biogas related activities. It was
reported that the company has plans to extend its service areas to Palpa and Myagdi districts too. It was told that
the company installed 109 plants during F.Y. 2051/52 and 265 plants during 2052/53. The company has set a
target of constructing some 400 biogas plants in its working areas during the present fiscal year. Tilt the end of
December it was reported that 50 biogas plants of various sizes have been installed.
