3.0 CONSTRUCTION, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF BIOGAS PLANT 3.1 Construction 3.1.1 Plant Location The households sampled for the study represented 8 districts in three zones (Please refer table 1 in clause 1.4.3). Among these, six districts were located in the hilly region and the other two were located consisted of areas both in hill and inner terai regions. However, the plants inspected in these districts were located in inner terai area. Plant located in the farthest distance from nearest roadhead was observed to be that of Mr. Tul Bahadur Gharti which lied at a distance of about 20 kilometers ( 6-8 hours walking distance) in Chapakot VDC in Syangja district. 3.1.2 Reason for Installation The Users' Survey report of 1993 stated that the most popular reasons mentioned for the installation of a biogas plant were scarcity of firewood and lighting fuel (86%); and the ease with which one can cook and light on biogas (5%). It also confirmed that very few (2%) households installed a biogas plant to improve household sanitation (hygienic point of view) and only one plant owner said he installed it to get better manure.
