Courtland C. Smith, 1927 – 2002<br />

Courtland C. Smith FSA, MAAA died on October 21, 2002 in Dallas, Tex. Court is survived by his widow, Judith Austin Smith, two<br />

sons and two daughters from a previous marriage, and five grandchildren.<br />

Court Smith was born on February 4, 1927 in New York City. He served in the army during World War II, attending the Army<br />

Language School at Monterey, Calif. He subsequently received his Bachelor's degree from Yale and his Master's from Columbia.<br />

He joined the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as an actuarial trainee in 1954. Most <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>essional career was spent in<br />

reinsurance, where he held senior-level actuarial positions with North American Re (now Swiss Re), Cologne Re, and Winterthur Re.<br />

He had also been an independent consultant.<br />

He was a member <strong>of</strong> the Yale Alumni Association.<br />

Court will be remembered for his gentleness, his unshakable integrity, and his remarkable skill in devising ingenious solutions to<br />

difficult problems. He was a beloved friend and colleague to all who were fortunate enough to know him<br />
