j Snaper and Kirsch Like Cinerama, But What's It All Total Up To? NEW YORK—"Any of you fellows want to hear about Cinerama?" inquired Wilbur Snaper, president of National Allied, at the Wednesday afternoon session of the Chicago convention. "Sure! Sure! Let's have it," came the responses from various parts of the room. Snaper resumed: "Jack Kirsch and I succeeded in getting tickets. It's remarkable. There's a projection room over to the right, another in the center, and one on the left—on the orchestra level where they removed seats. "Jack grabbed my arm. He kept saying. 'Wow! Gosh! It's remarkable!' "He was right. Then we started figuring. There's those three projection machines and projectionists, that's about, well, let's say $15,000. There's those missing seats. There's that big triple-width screen with the sides made out of strips. There's those six or eight loud speakers. What's it all come to? I don't know. Less than a million, I hope. "It's really great, though. Jack and I both liked it." Broadway Hit Producers Sue 20th-Fox on Title NEW YORK—The producers of the Broadway musical hit, "Guys and Dolls," Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin, have started a suit against 20th Century-Fox seeking an "injunction and damages" based on "unauthorized and illegal" use of the stage show's title in advertising the Damon Runyon film. "Bloodhounds of Broadway." "Guys and Dolls," based on a Damon Runyon story, celebrated its second year on Broadway November 26. "Bloodhounds of Broadway," a November release, is in its third week at the Roxy Theatre. Feuer and Martin assert that the advertising of the picture makes references to "the screen's big Broadway musical" and also refers to Damon Runyon's "Guys and Dolls." Charles Einfeld, director of advertising and publicity for 20th-Fox, said that the legal department had received a summons by mail November 24. The bill of complaint is answerable in 20 days from that date. Sarnoff to Stay as Head Of Manpower Commission NEW YORK—President-elect Eisenhower and David Sarnoff, chairman of the board of Radio Corp. of America, have reached an agreement whereby Sarnoff will continue as chairman of the Citizens Advisory Commission of Manpower Utilization in the Armed Forces. Sarnoff was named as chairman of the commission about six weeks ago by Defense Secretary Robert A. Lovett. DuMont Division Moves NEW YORK—The international division of Allen B. DuMont Laboratories has moved from Clifton, N. J., to larger headquarters in suite 8201 of the Empire State building here. Ernest A. Marx is division director. The f.ablt; address, Albeedu, remains the same. 46 Raibourn Promises News About Color TV Tube NEW YORK—Paul Raibourn, president of Paramount Television, returned early in the week from a flying visit to the coast with the prediction that there will be an important announcement soon about the company's tricolor Lawrence-Chromatic television tube which will enable home sets to receive color television. He said it would be "big news." but declined to comment further. Plans have been under way to demonstrate the tube in key cities. Raibourn was enthusiastic about the effect of Cinerama upon the thinking of members of the industry in all segments. He said its appeal has "waked up" studio heads and exhibitors by stimulating new thought along technical and promotion lines, in contrast to an earlier attitude that little was new under the sun. Asked if plans were under way for Paramount to form a subsidiary for the production of films for television, Raibourn said it was no secret the company had studied the idea for some time, but that there was nothing new to report. While on the coast. Raibourn met with Y. Frank F'reeman studio executive. and with Klaus Landsberg, vice-president and general manager of station KTLA. NY Laboratory Workers To Get Wage Increase NEW YORK—The lATSE Motion Picture Home Office Employes Local H-63 has reached an agreement with Pathe Laboratories and DeLuxe Laboratories for a new wage contract for office workers calling for a pay increase of approximately 10 per cent. The agreement also calls for additional severance pay. Local H-63 has also been selected as bargaining agent by employes of Columbia exchange in a National Labor Relations Board election. Local H-63 also petitioned NLRB for an election at the National Screen Service exchange, which will be held December 10. In the TV field. Screen Actors Guild has called a strike against producers of filmed TV commercials for December 1, following a unanimous vote of membership in New York and Los Angeles. All SAG members have been instructed not to accept employment in television film commercials after midnight, November 30. Six Pace Press Veterans Honored by Co-Workers NEW YORK—Six veteran workers at Pace Press, large theatrical and commercial printers, were honored November 26 for their 170 years of combined service. Albert R. Hamerslag. president, and 200 fellow workers joined in the tribute. The veterans of more than 25 years service: Steve Clark, feeder, 31 years; Paul Chipparone, assistant foreman, 31 years; Jack Hughes, pressman and night foreman, 25; Al Weisholz, feeder, 26; Milton Herman, sales manager, 27, and Dominic Legrecca, pressman, 30. Snyder Admits Step To Speed U Tax Case WASHINGTON—Rep. Carl T. Curtis (R., Nebr.) asked that on Friday (21) Treasury Secretary John W. Snyder be asked to testify before the House Ways and Means Committee investigating the Bureau of Internal Revenue about his interest in the Universal tax case. Curtis pointed out that John Horton became Washington representative for Universal in February 1950, shortly after he married the daughter of Secretary Snyder. He said that a log of phone calls to and from the office of now-resigned BIT general counsel Charles Oliphant shows "considerable many other cases, and that his only interest on the part of the secretary of the treasury in the Universal Pictures case." The case involves a i $20,000,000 excess profits tax claim filed by Universal. Snyder said that he showed the same interest in consideration was to speed settlement. He denied making recommendations in the Universal case. "I have always pressed and shall continue to press for settlement of all types of tax cases as expeditiously as possible, consistent with the interest of the government," he said. Telephone Co. Division Moving Out of New York NEW YORK—The long lines department of American Telephone & Telegraph Co. will move its headquarters for the eastern area from here to White Plains early in 1954. Carl i E. Wideberg, eastern area general manager. said a construction contract will be awarded soon and ground breaking start December 10 at company-owned property at 400 Hamil- : ton Ave. The White Plains building will be six storie? with a gross floor area of about 140.000 squait feet, tenanted by about 540 administrative employes and 100 operating and maintenance workers. Construction will begin immediately on a 200-foot temporary tower to test transmission of microwave signals between White Plains and other points on the company's radio-relay networks. Present plans do not call for routing television programs through White Plains. i California Hospital Award Goes to Eric Johnston HOLLYWOOD— Despite the absence of the; guest of honor, the City of Hope held its, annual award dinner Sunday (23 » at the Hotel Statler here to present its yearly award for humanitarian and charitable activity to Ei-ic Johnston, president of the Motion Picture Ass'n of America. Johnston, currently in South America, could not be present for the event. The City of Hope is a hospital and research center in Duarte, Calif. To Produce TV Programs NEW YORK— Novel Films has been I'oimeci by J. Milton Salzburg for producing integrated film programs for television. Salzburp will be president, Frank Soulc. vice-president, and Jack H. Rosner, treasurer. The first series will be a group of 13 stories from the greai classics of literature for early 1953 release. L. Gunzburg's Natural Vision three-dimensional process, was given dual world premieres Wednesday (26i at the Hollywood and Downtown Paramount theatres. Mayor Fletcher Bowron proclaimed the occasion the beginning of "Three Dimension week," while coverage of the event was supplied via station KLAC-TV and the radio outlet, KFWB. A.mong first-nighters, in addition to Oboler and the film's stars, Robert Stack and Barbara Britton, were such circuit executives as Raymond Willie of the Interstate chain, Dallas; Holland Smith. New Orleans, and Earl Long, Paramount's city manager in San Francisco, who were guests of Jerry Zigmond, west coast division chief of United Paramount. Paramount's "Road to Bali," starring Bing Crosby. Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour, ha.s been set to open Christmas day in seven local theatres—the Orpheum, downtown; the Paramount Hollywood; the Picwood. Manchester. Gage Drive-In, El Monte Drive-In and Van Nuys Drive-In. Also scheduled for a Christmas day debut is "Come Back.
