Alumni Discovery Initiative
Comprised of 23 student ambassadors, the Alumni Discovery Initiative
contacted 1,149 alumni and successfully interviewed 484, bringing
the program total to over 1,000 alumni interviewed since its launch in
early 2009. Student ambassadors continue to play a critical role in
engaging alumni with UC San Diego, verifying and updating alumni
information, marketing key campus and alumni initiatives, and identifying
special-interest and affinity-engagement opportunities.
Regional Outreach
In June 2011, UCSD Alumni’s new Outreach and Engagement team
announced the addition of four full-time staff, each charged with
meeting 500 graduates (outside San Diego) from two regions with
the largest alumni population: Los Angeles and the Bay Area. These
officers live full-time in their region and return to San Diego once
per quarter to meet with campus colleagues. The goal is to engage
thousands of alumni through meaningful, one-on-one interaction.
UCSD Near You
Now in its sixth year, nearly 500 alumni attended six events in San
Diego, Sacramento and Washington, D.C. with topics ranging from
children’s literature in an e-reader age with Seth Lerer, dean of arts
and humanities to a discussion of energy independence with Tony
Haymet, director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and a
deeper look at the book, Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of
Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to
Global Warming with Naomi Oreskes, professor and science historian.
