Alumni Discovery Initiative Comprised of 23 student ambassadors, the Alumni Discovery Initiative contacted 1,149 alumni and successfully interviewed 484, bringing the program total to over 1,000 alumni interviewed since its launch in early 2009. Student ambassadors continue to play a critical role in engaging alumni with UC San Diego, verifying and updating alumni information, marketing key campus and alumni initiatives, and identifying special-interest and affinity-engagement opportunities. Regional Outreach In June 2011, UCSD Alumni’s new Outreach and Engagement team announced the addition of four full-time staff, each charged with meeting 500 graduates (outside San Diego) from two regions with the largest alumni population: Los Angeles and the Bay Area. These officers live full-time in their region and return to San Diego once per quarter to meet with campus colleagues. The goal is to engage thousands of alumni through meaningful, one-on-one interaction. UCSD Near You Now in its sixth year, nearly 500 alumni attended six events in San Diego, Sacramento and Washington, D.C. with topics ranging from children’s literature in an e-reader age with Seth Lerer, dean of arts and humanities to a discussion of energy independence with Tony Haymet, director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and a deeper look at the book, Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming with Naomi Oreskes, professor and science historian. we’re in your community Alumni Clubs Regional alumni clubs (formerly chapters) grew significantly with new groups springing up in locations as far afield as London, South Korea and Vietnam. Clubs saw an increase in alumni participation, with 3,047 alumni attending nearly 100 events. These regional clubs (over 25 around the world) help alumni connect to each other and to the University with opportunities for social and professional networking. Regional alumni clubs hosted welcome events for UC San Diego’s newest graduates, career nights for mid-career alumni, and the annual Summer Send-Off Picnic with alumni volunteers greeting the newest members of the University community—freshmen and transfer students—before they arrive on campus. Regional alumni clubs added eight new locations, including Boston, Hawaii, Latin America, London, Portland, Singapore, South Korea and Vietnam. Professional networks have engaged over 1,000 alumni with the addition of Capitol Tritons, Financial Professionals Network, Legal Alliance, and Educators Network. The Entertainment Alliance was established in 2009. These groups publish professional directories, host networking events, and build relationships with companies seeking to recruit UCSD students. Volunteers In addition, 2,453 alumni volunteers served as event planners, webinar hosts, career advisers, student recruiters, legislative advocates, scholarship application readers and more. Also, 40 alumni personally called more than 800 admitted students as part of the Alumni Calling Campaign to congratulate them and answer any questions they may have about UC San Diego and life on campus.
