STATE OF AFFAIRS | Wrest Point State League Team of the Year
AFL Tasmania has unveiled the inaugural Wrest
Point State League Team of the Year.
This new innovation has seen the league’s
‘dream team’ chosen by a selection committee
comprising two AFL Tasmania representatives,
and two independent experts.
Selection of the leading players has been based
on performances over the 18 round home and
away season, a year that has seen the Wrest Point
Tasmanian State League reach new heights.
The Team of the Year is a new innovation for
Tasmanian football and parallels the national ‘All
Australian’ concept. Similar to the All Australian
recognition program the ‘Team of the Year’ also
selects the best player in each position on the
field, rather than the best 22 players in the
overall competition.
The coach and assistant coach of the year have
also been selected in what is set to become an
annual end of season highlight for the league.
ASSISTANT COACH Anthony Taylor (Launceston)
The selected team is not without controversy as 3
clubs, Hobart, Lauderdale and South Launceston,
are not represented. Hobart key forward Michael
Cassidy, Lauderdale midfielder Marcus Fitze and
South’s State ruckman Mitchell Hills have all been
overlooked.
Another controversial selection is the placement
of Brett Geappen at full forward ahead of Hudson
Medalist Brian Finch, who is in the pocket. Given
‘Budgie’ missed half the season following his
retirement due to injury it seems he has been
selected as the ultimate decoy full forward.
Clarence has 7 representatives in the team and at
least one player on every line except the midfield
where their prolific and talented teenage star Josh
Green could only have missed selection due to
State underage duties.
Congratulations to all those players and coaches
who have been recognized with selection in the
first Wrest Point State League ‘Team of the Year’.
