Guidance about Levels
The programme has four levels of courses on
offer (although not all levels are available in
every language). The levels are Breakthrough,
Preliminary, Intermediate and Advanced and they
allow us to match course content to a national
framework called “The Languages Ladder”.
Conversation and Cultural Awareness classes
are available in some languages for speakers
approaching fluency and focus on developing
speaking and listening skills at a more
advanced level.
The statements below give information about
the course at each level. Read the descriptions
to identify the likely level that you think might be
for you. Remember, these tell you about some of
the things that you will be able to do when you
have finished the course NOT what you need to
be able to do before joining.
We will be holding Open Evenings across
the borough in September. Please telephone
Centres for more information and to enrol.
Breakthrough
By the end of this level you will be able to:
• Ask and answer simple questions and
talk about my interests
• Understand the main points from
a short spoken passage
• Understand the main points from
a short written text
• Write one or two short sentences
and complete a simple form
Preliminary
By the end of this level you will be able to:
• Give a short prepared talk on a topic of your
choice and answer simple questions about it
• Understand the main points and some detail
from a short spoken passage
• Understand the main points and some
detail from a short written text
• Write short texts on a range of familiar topics
Intermediate
By the end of this level you will be able to:
• Tell a story or relate the plot of a book
or film and give your opinions about it
• Understand spoken language that contain
some unfamiliar words and phrases
• Understand texts that contain some
unfamiliar words and phrases
• Write texts e.g. letters, conveying simple
opinions and points of view
Advanced
By the end of this level you will be able to:
• Argue a point of view
• Understand the main points of authentic
conversations/spoken passages in a range
of different contexts
• Understand authentic written texts of moderate
length and complexity in a range of different
contexts
• Write coherent texts in an appropriate register
e.g. a formal letter/an account of a visit
Conversation and Culture
If you can do all of the above and would like to
refine your higher level speaking and listening
skills and improve your understanding about the
culture behind your language of choice these
informal courses may be right for you.
