Basic IT Skills If you are new to computers or want to be able to use applications such as Word Processing and Spreadsheets, you will need to demonstrate that you can use a mouse effectively, know your way around the keyboard and understand about saving your work. If you have no previous experience of using a computer you will have to complete a Basic IT or similar course to develop these skills. We then have a range of possible courses you can progress to such as Internet and Email. iMac Foundation or Foundation Skills in IT Foundation Skills in IT This course is designed for those who have limited ICT skills and who want to improve and develop their skills in using Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, additionally you will gain an understanding of basic Internet and Email. This is a level 1 course and on successful completion you could progress to an Intermediate Skills in IT Course or Intermediate Skills modules. Intermediate Skills in IT This course is designed for those people who already have a basic understanding and ability to use the Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint and who wish to consolidate their skills so that you can be confident in their use and be able to apply those skills effectively at home or in the workplace. These are level 2 courses and on successful completion you could progress to an Advanced Skills in IT Course or Advanced Skills modules. iMac Foundation This course is designed for those who are new to using an Apple style computer such as the iMac and who want to improve and develop their skills, flexibly across different systems. iMacs can be used for a wide range of applications, both for entertainment as well as professionally. This introductory course will explore the differences between the Apple operating system and Windows, differences in navigation and provide a basic introduction to iMac applications. On successful completion of this course you can progress on to iMac Intermediate. iMac Intermediate The iMac Intermediate course will provide you with the opportunity to gain a more expansive and in depth of the software, looking at iDVD, iMovie, iPhoto, iWeb and GarageBand. These will enable you to gain a greater understanding and provide you with the skills to be able to explore these in greater depth. On successful completion of this course, should you wish you will be able to progress on to the iMac modules to expand your skills further, gain a full understanding of the applications and undertake some personal projects. Advanced Skills in IT These courses and modules are more demanding and are designed to develop your skills so that you are able to work independently with a high level of ICT competence. Skills gained through a greater in depth knowledge of MS office applications will enable you to utilise your skills effectively to solve ICT and Administration problems in the workplace and organise effectively at home. Four modules will be available Excel for Spreadsheets, Word Processing. Skills for Life Literacy and Numeracy courses Could you boost your confidence by brushing up your reading, writing, spelling or grammar? Could you improve your prospects if you felt more able to work things out using maths? These are Skills for Life and you can develop your skills by joining our courses in Literacy or Numeracy. All the classes are free to eligible learners but there is a minimum attendance of 80%. The courses are run throughout the borough during the day, at family friendly times, or in the evening. Which course is right for me? If you are a new learner, then you will need to attend a 2-hour appointment so that we can meet you and identify the best class for you. This will include: • a level-finder exercise, • a chance to talk about your literacy or numeracy needs • starting your learning plan. When your level has been agreed, you will be offered a place on a course that best suits your needs. Our courses cover all levels from very basic up to GCSE level.
