Product Sales Plans<br />

NEW YORK- United Artists<br />

began during<br />

the week a series of sales meetings at which<br />

division and district managers were relaying<br />

to each branch the company program established<br />

at the recent sales conference here.<br />

Plans called for attendance at many of the<br />

sessions of William J. Helneman. distribution<br />

vice-president, and B. G. Kranze. general<br />

sales manager. Milton E. Cohen, eastern division<br />

manager, and James Velde, western division<br />

manager, were visiting meetings in their<br />

territories.<br />

At the New Yoric conference a record product<br />

line-up of 48 releases for 1953-54 was<br />

announced. They will utilize 2-D, 3-D. color,<br />

wide screen, Cinemascope and stereophonic<br />

sound.<br />

District managers assigned to conduct the<br />

field meetings are John Turner, eastern, who<br />

will cover Boston, Buffalo, New Haven, Philadelphia,<br />

Pittsburgh and Wasliington; Harry<br />

Goldman, central, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland,<br />

Detroit and Indianapolis: George Pabst.<br />

southern, Atlanta. Charlotte, Dallas and New<br />

Orleans; F. J. Lee, midwest, ICan.sas City,<br />

Milwaukee. Minneapolis, Omaha and St.<br />

Louis, and Ralph Clark, west coast. Denver.<br />

Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, San Francisco<br />

and Seattle.<br />

Charles S. Chaplin. Canadian division<br />

manager, will supervi.se the meetings in Calgary,<br />

Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg<br />

and St. John, New Brunswick.<br />

Fire at Columbia Studios<br />

Causes $100,000 Loss<br />

BURBANK, CALIF. — A fire destroyed<br />

nearly a square block of motion picture sets<br />

in the heart of Columbia Pictures ranch Tuesday<br />

(\5't. An unofficial estimate placed damage<br />

near $100,000. The ranch, five miles from<br />

the main Columbia studio, contains outdoor<br />

and four stages for making films.<br />

Included in the sets razed were a fourstory<br />

apartment building, a bank and a<br />

medieval galleon. Eerie illumination was provided<br />

by bursting star shells stored for use in<br />

the current filming of a sea story.<br />

'Cinerama' Starts Second<br />

Year in N.Y. October 1<br />

NKVV YORK Thl.s Is Cinerama." which<br />

opened at the Broadway Theatre Sept. 30,<br />

1952, will start its second year of two-a-day,<br />

re.served .seat performances at the Warner<br />

Theatre October 1 with a record of capacity<br />

buslne.-ss dally and a total gro.ss for the year<br />

of well over $2,600,000.<br />

"This Is Cinerama" played for 35 weeks at<br />

the Broadway Theatre before moving to the<br />

more centrally located Warner Theatre, in<br />

the heart of Times Square, where the production<br />

is now in its 15th week. <strong>Boxoffice</strong><br />

lines are in evidence at the theatre daily<br />

and the advance sale Is large, accordfng to<br />

the theatre.<br />

"This Is Cinerama" is also In its 26th week<br />

at the Music Hall, Detroit: Its 20th week at<br />

the Hollywood, Los Angeles, and its seventh<br />

week at the Palace, Chicago, and will open<br />

at the Boyd Theatre. Philadelphia, early in<br />

October. Stanley-Warner, which recently acquired<br />

the exclusive rights to the process from<br />

Cinerama F>roductions. also plans an installation<br />

in Wa.shlngton. D. C. .shortly.<br />

Arnold Productions Sues<br />

UA for $370,568 Damages<br />

NEW YORK—Arnold Productions, Inc., has<br />

brought a $370,568 damage suit against<br />

United Artists In New York supreme court<br />

and Justice Samuel Di Falco has granted a<br />

motion allowing examination of UA records.<br />

The suit concerns foreign distribution of three<br />

Arnold Pressburger films. "Hangmen Also<br />

Die." "It Happened Tomorrow" and "Scandals<br />

in Paris." the rights to which were assigned<br />

the plaintiff.<br />

UA has replied that It has had no remittances<br />

on them from Germany and that only<br />

a part of the Italian earnings can be transferred.<br />

Arnold Productions also asks for the<br />

retiUTi of television rights to "Scandals In<br />

Paris." given UA.<br />
