34-35 BA in English Language and Literature Teaching and Learning Methods The program is delivered in a variety of ways, including lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. Students are expected to study primary and secondary texts, and at the upper-level of study, to conduct basic research in the primary and secondary texts in the field. Literature is one of the primary creative acts of humankind, and the study of literature not only exercises our skills of interpretation and critical thinking, but also gives us access to the history and ideas that have shaped our world. Objectives: Upon successful completion of this program students will be able to: • Recognize the major literary genres • Know the outline of English and American literary history • Understand and apply the tools of literary criticism to the study of literature • Find and evaluate source materials (both primary and secondary) for the study of literature • Place literature in English in a global, comparative context • Understand basic linguistic and sociological theories about the social role of language • Create analytical and interpretive arguments, and to express them in complex, polished English prose Skills Outcomes: As a result of completing this program, students should have acquired the following skills and values: • Effective writing and oral communication skills • Effective interpersonal communication skills and personal development • Quantitative and qualitative literacy • Socio-cultural and international awareness Assessment: A variety of methods of assessing progress are used, including essays, reports, critical analyses, presentations and exams (unseen and open). Some of these may also be prepared as a group as well as individually. Possible Career Options: Graduates who enter the job market with a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature may find employment in a wide range of professions, often those emphasizing research skills; analytic and interpretive skills; production of written materials; and communication, whether oral or written. Further Study Options: The entry qualifications for graduate studies differ from university to university; however, an American bachelor's degree is accepted by most universities. Competitive universities, in addition to the degree itself, usually require a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Successful graduates interested in further study may progress to Master's and Doctoral degree programs in • Literature • Professional Communication • Culture Studies • Media and Communication Studies • Education If you are interested in pursuing opportunities for study abroad, you are encouraged to contact your advisor early on your studies at UNYP.
