Student Counseling
UNYP is pleased to offer its students a range of
services to help them as they persue their degrees.
The center is available to all students to assist in any
problems or issues regarding their academic as well
as personal well-being.
The counseling center can assist you in managing your
adjustment to college life, as well as help you with
career planning, time management, study skills or
presentation anxiety. The center also serves as a
contact point for issues regarding the university's
sexual harassment and anti-discrimination policies.
We are also here to help with issues from your
personal life such as drug or alcohol problems, eating
disorders, anxiety, depression or any other type of
mental health concerns. The counseling center
provides students with referals to our network of
clinical psychologists who specialize in helping
students overcome these difficulties.
All records and counseling services are kept in
complete confidentiality, and information about the
student will never be released without their written
consent (except when prohibited by law or in life or
death cases). All initial consultations are free of charge
for UNYP students.
English as a Second
Language Program
Students who do not meet the TOEFL criteria for
admission may enroll in a number of English language
classes and a limited academic program depending on
his/her TOEFL score and placement essay.
The goals of the intensive English language courses
are to develop English writing, speaking, and listening
skills needed to succeed in an academic environment
in which all teaching is done in English.
Students will develop academic skills that will enable
them to:
Effectively and critically analyze academic texts
Understand the importance and necessity of effective
study skills
Improve lecture note-taking skills
Write effectively in an academic tone
Build their vocabulary Improve their TOEFL scores.
These English language classes do not count towards
the number of credits a student needs to complete a
degree. Rather, they are designed to improve students'
English language abilities so that they may enroll in at
least five courses in their study program and complete
these courses satisfactorily.
Library Resources
The UNYP library is located on the first floor of the
main building and has multiple copies of textbooks for
all courses taught, as well as a general collection
which consists of select titles in the fields taught at
the university. The library also includes a digital copier
and computer lab with workstations for student use,
internet connections for laptop computers, a reading
room and a quiet room for study. UNYP students also
have access to a wide range of online libraries,
databases, and other information services, such as
ProQuest which covers 5,000 journals, Emerald with
over 40,000 full-text articles for students of
management and business, and e-libraries through
agreements with UNYP's cooperating institutions.
ESC's on-line Library and Learning Resources are
availble to most UNYP students including the E-book
Catalog and Research Database, Writing Research
Center and Mathematics Library
Computing Facilities
UNYP has three instructional computer labs in addition
to a computer lab in the library for research by
students. The PC labs are available for student use
daily from 8:30 AM to 9:00 PM, including Saturdays
and Sundays. The university offers to every student,
faculty member and staff their own account for
electronic access to the Internet with a high-speed
connection. The intranet system provides students
with access to individual course material, course
discussion boards, transcripts, and their financial
status. UNYP also offers a Wi-Fi hotspot, for students
who wish to bring their laptops and access the
internet from the wireless connection.
Instructional Technology
UNYP is committed to providing a range of equipment
and multimedia devices in order to enhance the
learning experience. Classrooms are fully equipped
with portable or fixed data projectors, laptops,
connection to the central network, and DVD players,
while students can have access to this equipment as
well as a video camera for rehearsing a presentation,
or for study purposes.
