Ahcom Shrine Club
We have the good fortune at Ahcom of having two
young boys with cerebral palsy, who could not walk and
now will. Eric McLean who returned from Montreal
after surgery last June, age 7 now. Divan met them Jan.
2010 at our installation when he could not walk and
again last Thursday when he can take independent
steps.
Also, Anthony Klassen, age 5 now,
4 at surgery time in Nov. He is
walking over 100 steps independent
now and improving daily.
Anthony born Dec. 17, 2005 and his
two young sisters live just outside
Tilbury Ont., with their parents.
Family contacted Ahcom in late Sept
2009 to request a visit to Shriner`s
Hospital for a consultation. They
were familiar with our club as we
had sent two other family members to Shriner`s Hospital
in previous years. Those visits led to no dramatic results
as this one did.

Oct. 18, 2010 To clinic in Montreal. Doctor
confirmed surgery soon
Oct. 31 - Dec. 17 Anthony to have tests at
2010 Children's Hospital Montreal
Monday, Tuesday Wednsday
and surgery Thursday Nov 4.
Return to Shriner`s Hospital
Nov 9 for recovery, monitoring
and in depth therapy.
Once Anthony returns to
Shriner`s Hospital, parent
stays in child`s room rather
than hotel.
Prior to returning home,
Anthony and Becky spend
the last two weekends at the Belvedere Hotel to
ensure both Mom and child are completely independent
prior to being at home. This way, no one is around
to help etc. which happens at Hospital. After first
weekend out, Mom is to provide therapists with any
concerns. These are worked on for week and then
repeat weekend out to ensure independence.
Dec. 17, 2010 Anthony and Mom fly home from
Montreal. Anthony can walk. It is
first flight for both. It is Anthony`s
fifth birthday ! Patients cannot
use train after this surgery until
has period of time to heal.
Jan. 14, 2011 Anthony can complete 107
independent walking steps in
a row without tiring or falling.
This number increases daily.
Anthony must attend therapy sessions three times weekly
and do exercises and therapy daily at home. Becky
was taught these at Shriners during stay there. Intense
therapy must occur first year and the continue at lesser
intensity for years. Shriners Hospital will monitor Anthony,
barring problems, at least once a year until he is
21 years old .
