SUBSEA 2013:
Beyond The Next Wave
We wish you a very warm welcome to this year’s flagship
subsea event, the largest of its kind in Europe.
The UK subsea sector has maintained strong growth in the face of
the continuing global recession. Not only is the industry one of the
fastest-growing sectors in the UK, it captures £6 billion – almost
one third – of the global market. It has successfully capitalised on
the range of new challenges faced by expanding into new frontiers
with deeper and more complex wells and continues to boast
significant future growth potential.
With that in mind, it is incumbent upon us to look to the long term
future and sustainability of the industry; we must look beyond the
next wave and consider how we can maintain our market position,
continue to innovate and attract new talent.
With this global market set to double over the next five years to
£40 billion, we must ensure that we are capable of exploiting
these opportunities in order to face the increasing competition
from foreign markets. Subsea UK is working hard on behalf of
its members to highlight the depth of expertise and unparalleled
experience available.
The UK presently leads the way around the world in subsea with
British experience, expertise, innovation and technology sought
after in every offshore oil and gas province. But heavy investment
in innovative subsea technology is essential if this lead is to be
maintained.
Trade bodies will be of key importance as we look to meet these
demands. We have continued to build upon our strong links with
government at both a regional and national level; on-going dialogue
with ministers has led to a deeper understanding and appreciation
of the industry. With the correct level of investment, and by working
with academia to attract new talent at every stage, Subsea UK and
its members can help develop the skills and technology needed in
order to ensure a sustainable pipeline of emerging talent into British
subsea businesses and the wider global markets.
By working closely with UKTI and SDI, Subsea UK can enable its
members to access the new and exciting opportunities in markets
such as Australasia and South America, guaranteeing our position
as a world-leader within the industry whilst maintaining our position
as the global centre of excellence.
