<strong>Swinburne</strong> Library<br />

The libraries on each <strong>of</strong> the three campuses <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> (Prahran,<br />

Hawthorn & Eastern) provide learning and<br />

information resources and services in support<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s teaching and research<br />

programs. Students are entitled to use and<br />

borrow from any campus library.<br />

The combined collections include over<br />

200,000 books, 3,000 periodical titles, print<br />

and CD-ROM indexes and abstracts, and a<br />

large collection <strong>of</strong> audio and video tapes,<br />

slides, interactive videodiscs' and computer<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware. All matecials in the collections are<br />

available for use in the libraries, and most may<br />

be borrowed. Access to all collection is<br />

facilitated by a shared online catalogue, and an<br />

inter-campus loan service. The range <strong>of</strong><br />

resources available is extended through<br />

reciprocal borrowing arrangements with most<br />

other university and TAFE libraries, and a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> networked access arrangements to<br />

electronic databases.<br />

Library staff work closely with teaching staff to<br />

develop resources and help students to make<br />

best use <strong>of</strong> them. Programs designed to<br />

develop student's information skills are an<br />

integral part <strong>of</strong> most courses. Individual<br />

assistance is provided at several service desks<br />

on each campus during the extensive opening<br />

hours. A range <strong>of</strong> printed guides to resources<br />

and services is also available.<br />

and conditions <strong>of</strong> use<br />

Persons entitled to use the library<br />

Each campus library is available for use by all<br />

full-time and part-time students and staff <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> who<br />

accept the library regulations. Members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

general public, including past students and<br />

staff, are welcome to read or use the facilities<br />

within the library provided that they also<br />

accept the regulations. They may also borrow<br />

from each library On payment <strong>of</strong> a membership<br />

fee to the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Library Information<br />

Service.<br />

The <strong>Swinburne</strong> librarian, Campus Librarian,<br />

or the senior staff member on the premises<br />

may refuse entry to the library to any person<br />

not registered as a borrower.<br />

Persons entitled to borrow from the<br />

Library<br />

Members <strong>of</strong> the Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

Full-time and part-time students <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

IJniversity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>. Approved borrowers<br />

from other institutions with which <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

has a reciprocal borrowing agreement.<br />

liegistered members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Library<br />

Information Service.<br />

Such other persons or organisations as the<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> Librarian or Campus Librarians<br />

may from time to time approve as borrowers.<br />

Photocopying<br />

Photocopying machines are available in the<br />

library. Users must <strong>note</strong> the relevant<br />

provisions <strong>of</strong> the Copyright Act and abide by<br />

them.<br />

Borrowing<br />

All materials borrowed must be recorded at<br />

appropriate issue points before the patron<br />

enters the security gate to leave the library.<br />

The due date is stamped on the item or on a<br />

transaction slip when it is borrowed. The<br />

borrower accepts responsibility for the care <strong>of</strong><br />

any item borrowed and for its return in good<br />

condition on or before the due date The<br />

library reserves the right to recall any item on<br />

loan before the expiration <strong>of</strong> the normal loan<br />

period.<br />

Books with a 14 day loan period or greater can<br />

be returned to any <strong>of</strong> the campus libraries. A1<br />

other items must be returned to the campus<br />

library from which they are borrowed.<br />

Audiovisual materials, periodicals and<br />

computer s<strong>of</strong>tware should be returned to the<br />

loans desk from which they were borrowed.
