<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> is<br />

The Manager, Equity Unit works within the<br />

<strong>University</strong> management to ensure that the<br />

removal <strong>of</strong> barriers to the full<br />

participation <strong>of</strong> all members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

community in the education system.<br />

<strong>University</strong> staff.<br />

The objectives <strong>of</strong> equal opportunity have an<br />

Negotiated Targets Strategy<br />

The State Training Board has adopted a policy<br />

<strong>of</strong> setting aside places in all mainstream TAFE<br />

programs for people from the following<br />

disadvantaged groups:<br />

women, where they are under<br />

represented<br />

people with disabilities<br />

people who have been or are currently<br />

institutionalised<br />

sole supporting parents<br />

Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders.<br />

If you are in one <strong>of</strong> these categories please<br />

contact the Equity Unit as above to determine<br />

if you are eligible for special entry.<br />

Students with Disabilities<br />

The EO Officer (Operations) acts as a<br />

contact/resource person for students and staff<br />

with disabilities. This assistance may include<br />

the provision <strong>of</strong> support such as attendant<br />

care, <strong>note</strong>takers, interpreters for hearing<br />

impaired, or the provision <strong>of</strong> special<br />

equipment.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> has an Integration Committee<br />

policy which brings together all the relevant<br />

sectors <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> to identify and put in<br />

place the most appropriate assistance and<br />

service required for each individual student.<br />

Any student with a disability may use the<br />

parking bays designated 'Disabled' in the<br />

service vehicle carpark <strong>of</strong>f St. John's Street by<br />

both paying for a Prahran Campus parking<br />

permit and displaying a disabled driver's<br />

permit (available from your local council). Any<br />

student with a temporary disability (e.g.<br />

broken leg) may apply to the Manager, Equity<br />

LJnit for a temporary disabled parking permit<br />

to allow them to park in the parking bay<br />

designated 'Disabled'.<br />

If you have a disability and are considering<br />

applying for any course <strong>of</strong>fered at <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> you are strongly<br />

advised to discuss your application with the<br />

Manager, Equity Unit, well before the<br />

enrolment date.<br />

International Student Unit<br />

Liaison Officer: Pamela Stewart<br />

The International Student Unit was established<br />

to provide a focal point for <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s<br />

International activities.<br />

This includes being responsible for all matters<br />

relating to the implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s<br />

international program and co-ordinating<br />

academic links with overseas tertiary<br />

institutions.<br />

All enquiries for study at <strong>Swinburne</strong> by non<br />

residents <strong>of</strong> Australia should be directed to the<br />

unit to ensure that Australian government<br />

admission policies are followed.<br />

The co-ordinator <strong>of</strong> the ongoing welfare <strong>of</strong><br />

overseas students is also a responsibility <strong>of</strong> the<br />

unit.<br />

The unit also operates a student hostel for<br />

international and Australian students.
