<strong>Technology</strong><br />

Course Duration and Mode <strong>of</strong> Study<br />

Students normally undertake this course over a<br />

three or four year period <strong>of</strong> part-time study. Day,<br />

evening and block release classes are available.<br />

Students normally attend classes for two hours a<br />

week for each unit enrolled. Those enrolled for<br />

block release attend for blocks <strong>of</strong> one, two or<br />

three days instead <strong>of</strong> on a weekly basis. On<br />

average two additional hours <strong>of</strong> work per unit<br />

per week are required for assignments etc. There<br />

is no set number <strong>of</strong>units to complete in any one<br />

year. Students choose the number <strong>of</strong> units they<br />

wish to study.<br />

Industry Recognition<br />

Completion <strong>of</strong> 23 units (17 compulsory and six<br />

electives) as listed, and the equivalent <strong>of</strong> 840<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> paid approved work experience in a<br />

library, entitles the student to receive an<br />

Associate Diploma <strong>of</strong> Social Science (Library and<br />

Information Studies). Students completing the<br />

course are qualified for admission as members <strong>of</strong><br />

the Library Technicians' Section <strong>of</strong> the Library<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> Australia. They may also join the<br />

Australian Library Technicians Association when<br />

partly <strong>of</strong> fully qualified.<br />

Advanced Standing<br />

Evidence <strong>of</strong> having completed units <strong>of</strong> topics<br />

similar to those in the course will be examined.<br />

Exemption from elective units may be granted<br />

for any studies successfully completed at Tertiary<br />

level, e.g., Languages, Literature, Sciences.<br />

Documentation as to syllabus, exit level and pas<br />

in the subject by the awarding institution must<br />

be supplied by the student. When appropriate,<br />

challenge tests will be <strong>of</strong>fered to students who<br />

believe they already possess the required skills<br />

and knowledge embodied in units. Contact the<br />

for details <strong>of</strong> exemptions.<br />

Application Procedure<br />

New students are enrolled twice a year subject to<br />

availability <strong>of</strong> places. Enrolments are in February<br />

for semester one and July for semester two.<br />

Written notification <strong>of</strong> a place is made no later<br />

than February, lor semester one, and July, for<br />

semester two. Notification <strong>of</strong> failure to gain a<br />

place is made after rhese dates and when all<br />

places are filled.<br />

Closing Dates<br />

Applicaticlns close on 30 November for semester<br />

one enrolment and on 31 May for semester 2<br />

enrolment. Late applications may be accepted<br />

depending on availability <strong>of</strong> places.<br />

Off Campus<br />

Students may be able to undertake some units <strong>of</strong><br />

this course through the college Off-Campus<br />

Centre. Enquiries should be directed to the Off-<br />

Campus Centre, telephone 522 6798.<br />

Assessment Procedures<br />

To gain the award students must;<br />

* pass all required units by demonstrating<br />

achievement <strong>of</strong> the performance objectives<br />

as outlined in current syllabus<br />

documentation;<br />

attend 80% <strong>of</strong> class contact time;<br />

complete 840 hours <strong>of</strong> paid work experience<br />

in a library concurrent with the course (this<br />

may be part-time or h11-time).<br />

Exemption Applications<br />

Exemption from units may be granted to those<br />

who have passed equivalent subjects at other<br />

institutions. No exemption will be granted for<br />

IISC or VCE subjects where these are part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

entrance requirement. Application forms are<br />

available at enrolment time.<br />

English Language<br />

Units are conducted in English. Students with<br />

English as a Second Language require advanced<br />

level English. Students must have sufficient<br />

English language skills to undcrstand oral<br />

instructions, read technical books and<br />

magazines, make oral presentations and prepare<br />

written reports.<br />

Fees and Charges<br />

l'he College charges an enrolment fee based on<br />

the maximum contact hours for enrolled units.<br />

Band 1 0 - 39 $30<br />

Band 2 40 - 79 $50<br />

Band 3 80 239 $140<br />

Band 4 240 - 359 $210<br />

Band 5 360 - 539 $3 10<br />

Band 6 540 - plus $390<br />

The Student Union also charges a fee which is<br />

compulsory.<br />
