five-day London visit where he went to
give his English cousins the version of the
saturation campaign he has used successfully
in this country.
Charles Brooks of Ashland, Me., who operates
three regular and two drive-ins in
the northern section of the state, has taken
over the State Theatre. Presque Isle, Me.,
formerly operated by Lloyd Brigham. As
Brooks also operates the Braden Theatre
in Presque Isle, it is expected that he will
close the State Theatre except for weekends
and will thus have no competition in
the city, as he also operates the Presque
Isle Drive -In. He owns the Opera House,
Ashland, and two theatres in Fort Kent,
the Savoy and the Fort Kent Drive-In.
His buying and booking is handled by Hy
Young of Boston. Although Brooks flies
to Boston infrequently, it is always a pleasure
to greet him on Filmrow. His last visit
was at the time of the Drive-In Theatre
Ass'n all-day meeting in early February,
when he was cited for having come the
greatest distance of any exhibitor or manager
attending the meeting.
Carl Garatolo is the new manager of the
Abington Drive-In, Abington, owned by
Anthony Fiore and others, which opened
for its second season April 23 with Joseph
G. Cohen handling the buying and booking.
Garafalo has managed theatres in
Jacksonville, Fla.
"Express© Bongo," a Continental Films
release starring Laurence Harvey and Sylvia
Sym, will play the Beacon Hill Theatre,
a Sack theatre, following the cui-rent
run of "The Fugitive Kind," it was announced
by Stan Davis. Continental's Boston
manager. For its Connecticut opening,
"Expresso Bongo" will play the Whalley
Theatre, New Haven, in mid-May.
Julius Covitz, who runs the Fairmount
Theatre, Hyde Park, established a new
record at his second-run theatre with
"Toby Tyler." On a Thursday through
Sunday run, the theatre took in more
money and more admissions than for any
other film playing the theatre.
Stan Davis of Continental Films, which
is handling "Room at the Top." has revealed
a history of playdates in the Boston
area which is making history for itself.
Starting in mid-May, "Room at the Top"
will enter its sixth downtown Boston run
at the May fair Theatre, where it will settle
down to an extended run. Twice before it
has played the Mayflower, all within a
period of six months. The film had its New
England premiere at Louis Richmond's
Kenmore Theatre, where it finished an
engagement of 13 weeks in mid-August.
Next it went to the Center Theatre for a
week and in September it played the Mayflower
Theatre for another week, both
sub-run houses but both in downtown Boston.
After the Academy Awards announcements,
"Room at the Top" returned to
downtown Boston, playing the Pilgrim
Theatre for one week and then moved over
to the Mayflower Theatre for another week.
On May 11, this British film starring Oscarwinning
Simone Signoret and Laurence
Harvey will return to the Mayflower Theatre
for an extended run.
