Regional Highlights The Janakpur Cluster The primary focus of Janakpur cluster is on Natural Resource and Livelihood. Some projects such as CHUNAUTI and Chuli are going through their initial phases of recruitment and are conducting baseline surveys. Projects working in the cluster: CHULI – Churia Livelihood Improvement CHUNAUTI – Addressing Child Marriage in Nepal through Behaviour Change Communication and Social Mobilization CORE Polio Programming JANSEEP - Janajati Economic Empowerment (JANSEEP) Program JIWAN II - Jalad Integrated Watershed and Natural Resources Management SAEENO - Strengthening Actions for Empowerment of Women through Economic Opportunities The Target Group: Poor, Vulnerable and Socially Excluded (PVSE) women, men, girls and boys with a special focus on Dalits, highly marginalized Janajatis, ultra-poor and poor households, children below 15 years, marriageable girls and boys, single women, conflict survivors, and disaster affected people. The Statistics: People direct and indirectly impacted: approximately 500,000 Families directly worked with: 6000 - 7000 Local partner organizations: 20 local partner NGOs Dreams are flourishing in Jalaidh river bed “There was a patch of land near our vicinity, around which 114 Households lived. The Janaki Women Awareness Society (JWAS) suggested that we should protect the public land and carry out income generating activities on it. However, it was clear that the small patch of land was not enough to support 114 households so JWAS suggested targeting the poorest households and leasing it out to them. After the poorest 10 were identified we went to the District forest office and were able to secure the land as a leasehold forest for forty years. We have not planted more than vegetables, 500 fruit trees, more than 1000 tree saplings, and more than 100 bamboos. We are now earning more than Rs. 10,000 form vegetables and more than Rs. 5000 from grasses. This has resulted in: • 30 poor household have been involved in green bank establishment and leasehold forestry through which they gained access to forest land for 40 years. Additionally, they also received safe drinking water by digging wells and received seedlings for replanting the trees. • Around 150 families have benefited through fish production in commonly maintained ponds. They also received the added value from the plantation of fruit trees and grass production on the banks of the ponds. • 100 Households belonging to rural workers and craft people benefited from skill development trainings like bicycle repairing, carpentry, Binditika, and animal health workers • 50 Households have benefited from enterprise development skills such as compressed stabilized earth block production, micro-concrete tiles production, bamboo treatment and production of truss learnt at Life School Centres (LSC) through which they received employment. • 200 Households have benefited from river bank vegetable farming and goat husbandry organized through the development of local groups and cooperatives. JANSEEP strives to empower three highly marginalized Janjati groups (Thami, Surel and Dhanuk) by integrating rights based advocacy with livelihood security.
