Regional Highlights The Bharatpur Cluster The Statistics: People direct and indirectly impacted: Approximately 1,262,800 Families directly impacted: Approximately 225,500 Families directly worked with: 18000 - 20000 Local partner organizations: 13 local partners Fish ponds handed over to dalit communities During an advocacy class on the issues related to common resource management and ownership in Kapilbastu, Dalit women raised concerns over the villagers’ collective rights to a pond in the local area. The pond was spread over a 0.75 hectare area and was currently being contracted out to some individuals who were not properly managing it. Because of this prior agreement, the locals had been unable to take advantage of the pond. To resolve the issue most effectively, CARE Nepal organized an interaction, led by local change agent Shivraj Dhobi, between local stakeholders, representatives of political parties and VDC representatives. During the interaction, handing over the ownership, management and maintenance responsibilities of the pond to the local women’s group was discussed and approved. Since then, the women have invested in 20 kg of fingerlings and have been raising fish in the pond. They are optimistic of getting a good return through the sale of fish. This initiative in Kapilbastu encouraged the Musahar women of Nawalparasi to undertake a similar initiative.
