No. 19/19 Louisville 83, No. 24/RV Kentucky 75
Dec. 3, 2006 • Louisville, Ky.
Freedom Hall • Att: 12,342
Junior guard Samantha Mahoney scored a career-high 27 points
to lead four Kentucky players in double figures, but No. 19
Louisville outlasted the No. 24 Wildcats, 83-75, in Freedom Hall.
The Cardinals, who never trailed in the contest, were led by
Angel McCoughtry’s 21 points and 15 rebounds. Louisville connected
on 29-of-42 free throws in the game, including 10-of-26 charity
shots in the second half.
Nastassia Alcius added 14 points and Sarah Elliott chipped in 13,
but the Wildcats shot 37.2 percent (29-of-78) from the floor and
couldn't take advantage of 24 Louisville turnovers.
The Cardinals came out firing, building an early 15-point lead
behind the play of McCoughtry and Yuliya Tokova. The Wildcats
rallied, consistently finding holes in Louisville's defense for easy
shots. Mahoney was everywhere, hitting from both inside and outside,
allowing Kentucky to pull within 42-39 at the half.
The Cardinals out-rebounded the Wildcats 50-38 and made the
big plays down the stretch. Kentucky pulled within 70-67 with just
more than four minutes left, but McCoughtry hit an acrobatic lay-up
and Tokova followed with a turn-around jumper and a pair of free
throws to help Louisville open up a 76-67 lead. The Wildcats got no
closer than five points the rest of the way.
