When did you know you wanted to be a
coach?
“I was in the 10th grade. I loved athletics
and played everything. But in 10th grade I
realized that I was not going to play in the
NBA and was not going to make a living
playing basketball. I knew then that coaching
would be the way to go.”
In one sentence, what is your coaching
philosophy?
“To instill honesty, hard work and discipline
in our team on and off the court.”
Who are your coaching influences or
mentors?
“My dad John Mitchell has been my greatest
coaching influence. He taught me the
winning tools of honesty, hard work and
discipline. He always challenged us to be
honest. His work-ethic is phenomenal and
he’s always had a lot of discipline in his
life. Carol Ross and Mickie DeMoss have
had the biggest impact on my development
as a college coach. Farrell Rigby, my
high school coach, also was a big influence
on me because he was the first person
to give me an opportunity to coach.”
What type of player fits the mold of
your program or philosophy?
“A player that is honest, hard-working and
has discipline.”
Is it true that you were the lead singer
in a band called “Coach Mitchell and
the B Team?”
“Yes. It’s true. It all came about when I
was joking with a friend of mine about
what a good singer I was and I asked him
when was he going to let me sing with his
band. Their singer couldn’t make it for a
rehearsal one weekend and he called me.
The rest is history. We were local celebrities
in Louisville, Miss., from 1995-99.”
What kind of music did the band play?
“We did a little bit of everything but we did
a Lynyrd Skynyrd medley that I really
liked.”
What is your favorite song ever?
“‘My Town’ by Montgomery Gentry.”
How would you describe your parents?
“My mom and dad are people of great
integrity and great character. They’ve been
married 44 years and have lived their lives
in a manner which has given our family
respect in our community. They worked
with the Cub Scouts for eight years and
impacted countless boys’ lives in that process.
My mother taught school and they’ve
been very active in our church. They’re just
really solid, hard-working people that have
always cared about their community.”
What is one thing they taught you that
you still use to this day?
“To be honest in all that I do. They never
gave us the easy way out. They always
challenged us to do things the right way.”
You’ve been married now for two years
and the rumor is your wife Jenna is a
fantastic cook. What is your favorite
dish that she makes?
“It’s hard to narrow it down because she is
a wonderful cook. She makes a great
meatloaf and you know you’re a good cook
if you can make meatloaf. It is insane how
good it is.”
What is one thing most people don’t
know about you?
“I’m an Eagle Scout. My whole family was
involved with the Scouts and all of my
brothers are Eagles as well.”
Most people probably don’t know that
you do some great impersonations of
people. Who is your favorite to impersonate?
“Van Chancellor is one of my all-time
favorites. I’ve always done a pretty good
Bobby Bowden impersonation and the
people in Florida like that one. I also do a
very good Jennifer Humphrey (former UK
Hoops forward) impersonation. People
think it’s pretty authentic.”
What is your favorite professional
sports team?
“The Cincinnati Reds. I fell in love with the
Big Red Machine back when I was about
five or six years old. I wore Johnny
Bench’s number back when I was a catcher.
I just always loved the Reds. I can’t
believe that I ended up living in a place
that isso close to them.”
