There are countless success stories from the<br />

become one <strong>of</strong> the nation’s top public universities,<br />
it boasts 80 national rankings for quality<br />
education by national publications and organizations.<br />
For instance, the Martin School <strong>of</strong><br />
Public Policy and Administration, College <strong>of</strong><br />
Law and College <strong>of</strong> Medicine are highly ranked<br />
in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings <strong>of</strong> the<br />
best graduate schools.<br />

And while the <strong>University</strong> continues to climb<br />

individuals. Thirty-eight percent <strong>of</strong> the freshman<br />
class <strong>of</strong> 2005 had a high school GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.8 or<br />

So while the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kentucky</strong> continues<br />
to build strong academic and research programs<br />
that attract national and international<br />
recognition, it also continues to enhance lives<br />
both in <strong>Kentucky</strong> and across the world.<br />
UK Achievements<br />
• UK ranks first when compared to the nation’s top 20 universities for small class size - 90 percent <strong>of</strong><br />
classes include 40 students or less, and the student-teacher ratio is 16:1.<br />
• The 2005-06 freshman class included 313 <strong>Kentucky</strong> Governor’s Scholars and Governor’s School for<br />
the Arts students, 151 Legacy students, 137 high school valedictorians, 40 National Merit Scholars,<br />
and three National Achievement Scholars.<br />
• Student represent 117 countries, all 50 states and every county in <strong>Kentucky</strong>.<br />
• UK has been rated as one <strong>of</strong> the 100 best colleges for African-American students.<br />
• The middle 50 percent <strong>of</strong> the ACT scores <strong>of</strong> incoming freshmen in 2005 showed a composite <strong>of</strong><br />
22 - 27, well above the national average <strong>of</strong> 18-25.<br />
• UK scholars - students, faculty and alumni-have been recognized by Nobel, Pulitzer, Rhodes, Fulbright,<br />
Guggenheim, Grammy, Metropolitan Opera and other prestigious panels.<br />
• Two Nobel Prize winners have been alumni <strong>of</strong> the university. Thomas Hunt Morgan won the prize in<br />
medicine in 1933 for his medical research in heredity and genetics, while William Nunn Lipscomb<br />
won the prize for chemistry research in 1976.<br />
• UK boasts over 80 national rankings for academic excellence.<br />
• The Martin School <strong>of</strong> Public Policy and Administration, College <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy, College <strong>of</strong> Law and<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Medicine are highly ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings <strong>of</strong> the best graduate<br />
schools.<br />
• UK is one <strong>of</strong> only seven universities in the U.S. that have programs in agriculture, engineering,<br />
law, medicine and pharmacy on a single campus.<br />
• UK received the Harry S. Truman Foundation Honor Institution Award for exemplary participation in<br />
the Harry S. Truman Scholarship program. UK has participated in the Truman Scholarship program<br />
for more than 20 years. Twelve Truman Scholarships have been awarded to UK students.<br />
• UK was awarded the largest grant in the school’s history from the National Science Foundation in 2002,<br />
$22 million to help strengthen and reform math and science education in Appalachia.<br />
• Numerous UK alumni have gone on to become presidents <strong>of</strong> universities and to lead Fortune 500<br />
companies.<br />
• In 2005-06, 135 athletes were listed on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.<br />
