Chapter 1. Data Preparation Recommendations Source Images Compression Options Two types of compression are possible: lossy and lossless. Lossy compression, such as JPG, compromises image fidelity to allow for smaller file size. Lossless compression, such as RLE or LZW, does not alter the image data in any way but cannot achieve the small file sizes that JPG or GIF can achieve. JPG works well for compressing continuous tone images; however, JPG compression can introduce some visible artifacts in line art and text. The TIFF file format can save images using the lossless LZW compression algorithm. Note: if you choose to use JPG continuous tone images as input to the RIP, save only the final version of the image in JPG format to avoid losing data. Prior to saving the final JPG version of the image, perform all editing and saving functions in TIFF format. The images in Figure 1.7 and Figure 1.8 show several original uncompressed images and some of the effects of JPG compression. A close-up view of some image data shows that JPG compression has harmed the data. Some of the contone data saved at high JPG quality levels hide the effects of the compression, while the lower quality, but smaller file size JPG compression leaves some visible artifacts in the image.
