Chapter 1. Data Preparation Recommendations Barcodes • Sans-serif fonts print at higher quality than serif fonts, particularly at smaller point sizes. • Avoid printing processed color text below 12 points. • To ensure that characters are fully formed, use processed color text that uses at least 50 percent intensity of one primary color other than yellow and no more than 200 percent total ink coverage. • Do not pre-render fonts as part of other images. If you must prerendered fonts into images and graphics, verify that the fonts are not anti-aliased. (See “Anti-Aliasing Fonts” in this section for details.) • Avoid using scanned text. If you must scan text from a pre-existing document, set the scan resolution to 600 dpi. • If text is less than 100 percent intensity, a pattern dither provides a more consistent appearance than an error diffusion dither. • Unless absolutely necessary, avoid using the PHOTOSHOP text options Faux Bold and Faux Italic. These options cause text to be blurry and/ or illegible when printed. Barcodes To scan reliably when printed, barcodes must be correctly positioned. To ensure optimal quality, print barcodes with only one ink, preferably black. During data prep, design barcodes using the print resolution being used to print the job. Do not scale barcodes up or down to sizes other than multiples of the original resolution. The printer RIP rounds off fractional pixels to the nearest pixel location. Some of the stroke widths and spaces vary by a pixel, making the barcode more difficult to read. Because your printing systems currently print at a maximum resolution of 300x1200 dpi, position barcodes so that the strokes are across the page rather than in the direction of paper travel when possible. Cross-page barcodes average a half letter grade higher in quality (according to the ANSI grading scale of “A - D”).
