Chapter 2. Printing Recommendations Stitching Stitching Your printing system is designed to accurately overlay multiple color planes of an image using sequential printheads that are in line with each other. Your printing system is not designed to accurately register from side-to-side across the web using two different printheads. Because the tone scale on your printing systems is derived from the spacial distribution of uniformly sized droplets, positional shifts in dither patterns are visually susceptible to rather dramatic shifts in color hue and/ or intensity, making it very difficult to align printheads for side-by-side printing. Shadow densities are much less susceptible than midtones to stitching errors. Avoid printing images across two adjacent, stitched printheads when possible. Figure 2.5 illustrates the problems that can occur when images are printed by adjacent, stitched printheads. The image on the left shows an example of print quality when the printheads are off by two pixels down and to the right. The image on the right shows the print quality when the printheads overlap.
