Summary <strong>of</strong> Significant Accounting Policies A Reporting Entity T he Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Commerce</strong> (the Department) is a cabinet-level agency <strong>of</strong> the Executive Branch <strong>of</strong> the U.S. government. Established in 1903 to promote U.S. business and trade, the Department’s broad range <strong>of</strong> responsibilities includes predicting the weather, granting patents and registering trademarks, measuring economic growth, gathering and disseminating statistical data, expanding U.S. exports, developing innovative technologies, helping local communities improve their economic development capabilities, promoting minority entrepreneurial activities, and monitoring the stewardship <strong>of</strong> national assets. The Department is composed <strong>of</strong> 13 bureaus, the Emergency Oil and Gas and Steel Loan Guarantee Programs, the National Intellectual Property Law Enforcement Coordination Council, and Departmental Management.
