A Reporting Entity<br />

T<br />

he Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Commerce</strong> (the Department) is a cabinet-level agency <strong>of</strong> the Executive Branch <strong>of</strong> the U.S. government.<br />

Established in 1903 to promote U.S. business and trade, the Department’s broad range <strong>of</strong> responsibilities includes predicting<br />

the weather, granting patents and registering trademarks, measuring economic growth, gathering and disseminating<br />

statistical data, expanding U.S. exports, developing innovative technologies, helping local communities improve their economic<br />

development capabilities, promoting minority entrepreneurial activities, and monitoring the stewardship <strong>of</strong> national assets.<br />

The Department is composed <strong>of</strong> 13 bureaus, the Emergency Oil and Gas and Steel Loan Guarantee Programs, the National<br />

Intellectual Property Law Enforcement Coordination Council, and Departmental Management.<br />

For the Consolidating Statements <strong>of</strong> Net Cost (see Note 17), some <strong>of</strong> the Department’s entities have been grouped together, based<br />
