Guy Miller Tree Plant − There’s Still Time
very Saturday through May, usually
E 9 a.m. – 12 noon, the Guy Miller
Tree Plant provides Cub Scouts and Boy
Scouts w ith a hands-on experience
renew ing and understanding the
importance of our forests and provides
significant impact in North-w est
reforestation. Youths w ill have a chance
to help in the reforestation of local
areas, and later visit the seedlings as they
grow into adult trees.
Planting sites are selected by public
and private sponsors in locations ranging
from the coast to the Cascades in the
18 counties of Oregon and Washington
served by Cascade Pacific Council. Each
unit provides its ow n transportation to
and from the planting site.
Each plant sponsor provides a supervisor
to explain tree planting; units need

sets from the popular Lew is
& Clark Aw ards Program are now available
on a pre-order basis.
The Lewis & Clark Awards
Program is a popular activity in packs
and troops throughout the council.
Scouts and adults earn aw ards for completing
successive levels in this program
that brings the Lew is & Clark expedition
to life. Progressive levels include Bronze,
Gold, Silver, and, through summer 2006,
the Presidential Aw ard. Each award has
an associated patch and medal. Soon
these patches and medals w ill be available
in limited edition sets.
Tw o special sets are available. The
“200th Anniversary Set” include three
medals (Bronze, Gold, Silver) and five
to provide tw o
adults per ten boys
for unit
organization and
control.
A segment
(purchased from
the Nor’West Scout Shop) is available
for all Scouts who parti-cipate in the
event. One Re-Tree certificate w ill be
given by the council to each
participating unit. One Guy Miller Tree
Plant ribbon w ill be given to each unit
that meets the requirement of 10 seedlings
planted per Scout plus view ing the
video (check out at the Scout Office).

this set are presented in a display folder.
This set is limited to 150, w ith a purchase
price of $135.
The second set, titled the “Presidential
Set,” includes a specially-numbered
Presidential level patch and matching,
specially-numbered medal. The patch
and medal are displayed in a stained
w ood box w ith a special laser-engraved
lid. This set is limited to 50, w ith a
purchase price of $150.

April is Youth
Protection Month
hildren today are often faced w ith
C choices that affect their development
and safety. Scout leaders can provide
education and guidance to prepare
Scouts to make solid decisions. This can
be achieved by talking w ith Scouts.
Some subjects are easy to discuss –
sports, grades, friends, and other daily
events. Other things are more difficult to
discuss, including child abuse.
More than 3 million reports of child
abuse are received each year, including
one-half million reports of child sexual
abuse. As a major youth-serving organization,
the Boy Scouts of America has a
unique opportunity to help protect the
nation’s youth.
April is Youth Protection Month. In
an effort to protect Scouts, each unit is
encouraged to participate in a youth
protection activity:
• Ensure unit leaders complete Youth
Protection Training.
• Discuss with youth in a unit meeting
the exercises found in the How to
Protect Your Children From Child Abuse
pamphlet, w hich is found in the
front of each youth and adult handbook.
• Present the age-appropriate, aw ard
w inning video-based training w ith
the meeting guide to youth and
parents:
-Youth Protection Training – for Adult
Volunteers and Parents
-A Time to Tell – For Cub Scouts
-It Happened to Me – for Boy Scouts
-Youth Protection: Personal Safety
Awareness – for Venturers
Sales of these special sets support the
ongoing administration of the Lew is &
Clark Aw ards Program.
