Adventure is Calling...Rafting, High Course<br />

roops, teams, and crew s can still<br />

T sign up for exciting summer<br />

challenge programs in 2006. Spaces are<br />

still available. Reservation forms are<br />

available from council service centers or<br />

from <strong>the</strong> council w eb site at<br />

www.cpcbsa.org. Activities and camps<br />

are filled on a first-come, first-served<br />

basis. Challenge programs are designed<br />

for youth and adults at least 13 years<br />

of age or older, and are specifically<br />

designed for high adventure experiences.<br />

New Fort Clatsop<br />

Replica<br />

s a follow -up to <strong>the</strong> last issue of<br />

A Compass Points and just across from<br />

<strong>the</strong> pinew ood derby races one can view<br />

<strong>the</strong> new replica of Fort Clatsop being<br />

assembled. The first of <strong>the</strong> tw o sections<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Fort Clatsop replica has been<br />

sent off for pressure treatment. The<br />

second structure has also been completed<br />

and w ill be loaded on log trucks<br />

and sent off for pressure treatment. In<br />

about a w eek, <strong>the</strong> first set of logs w ill be<br />

delivered to Fort Clatsop. On<br />

February 22, crews w ill be formed to<br />

start <strong>the</strong> process of physically carrying<br />

<strong>the</strong> logs from <strong>the</strong> Fort parking lot<br />

Deschutes white water action is great fun.<br />

White Water Rafting: Several great<br />

trip options aw ait groups of older<br />

Scouts. Led by an expert team of raft<br />

guides, individuals can choose from<br />

one, three, or five-day trips. Experience<br />

some of <strong>the</strong> finest rapids in Oregon on<br />

one of <strong>the</strong>se great trips. Space is limited<br />

to 20 individuals per trip. This is a fantastic<br />

w ay to build <strong>the</strong> teamw ork and<br />

fellow ship of Patrol Leader’s <strong>Council</strong>.<br />

C.O.P.E. Dates: C.O.P.E. (Challenging<br />

Outdoor Personal Experience)<br />

w ill help Scouts develop as a team. This<br />

program is offered each Saturday from<br />

<strong>Apr</strong>il to October at Scouters’ Mountain.<br />

Limit is 30 individuals per day. Make<br />

your group of youth leaders a stronger<br />

team and more confident after successfully<br />

completing <strong>the</strong> high course.<br />

Camp Baldwin Rafting Available<br />

to troops attending Camp Baldw in<br />

during 2006. Spend one day on <strong>the</strong><br />

Deschutes River rafting w ith a great<br />

team of guides. There is an additional<br />

charge, and reservations should be<br />

made prior to arrival at camp. Tw enty<br />

spaces are available each w eek.<br />

Baldwin Windsurfing: Scouts<br />

attending Camp Baldw in this summer<br />

may take part in a unique experience:<br />

learning to w indsurf. This one-day<br />

program takes place at a w indsurf<br />

school in Hood River, and carries an<br />

additional charge. What a great thrill to<br />

stand on a board w ith sail full of w ind,<br />

gliding on <strong>the</strong> mighty Columbia River!<br />

Participation limited to tw elve. Interested<br />

Scouts should sign up now to be<br />

assured of a spot.<br />

Meriwe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Mar</strong>iners: Available to<br />

troops attending Camp Meriw e<strong>the</strong>r<br />

during 2006. Troops may choose adventures<br />

that may include crabbing, claming,<br />

Motor Boating Merit Badge, and riding<br />

in a dory boat from <strong>the</strong> fleet stationed in<br />

<strong>Pacific</strong> City. This program w as started in<br />

2004 w ith much success.<br />

A new replica is being built of <strong>the</strong> original Fort<br />

Clatsop that burned down last fall.<br />

approximately 200 feet to <strong>the</strong> construction<br />

site. For <strong>the</strong> next several months,<br />

construction of <strong>the</strong> Fort, <strong>the</strong> formation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> floors, and <strong>the</strong> building of furniture<br />

w ill be evolving. This historic effort<br />

w ill require many man and boy hours.<br />

Scouts and volunteers, in or out of <strong>the</strong><br />

area, have been cordially invited to<br />

participate in many w ays. Besides <strong>the</strong><br />

excitement of seeing <strong>the</strong> Fort go up, w e<br />

can also w ork on community hours,<br />

merit badges and just have a good time.<br />
