The Venturing for Faith Snow Weekend<br />

held in February 10-12 filled up early<br />

w ith crews registering in December.<br />

Aubrey Watzek Lodge w as filled w ith<br />

excitement as 98 young men and<br />

w omen, felt <strong>the</strong> night skiing on Saturday<br />

w as <strong>the</strong> highlight of <strong>the</strong> w eekend, w hile<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs really enjoyed <strong>the</strong> Sunday<br />

w orship service at <strong>the</strong> lodge.<br />

The LDS Snow Weekend for young<br />

men, members of The Church of Jesus<br />

Christ of Latter-day Saints, had a great<br />

time on <strong>the</strong>ir overnight stay at Nanitch<br />

Venturing<br />

Lodge on February 24-25. This year<br />

<strong>the</strong>re w as a rise in attendance w ith seven<br />

crew s bringing over 50 people. The late<br />

breakfast on Saturday is alw ays a hit<br />

w ith <strong>the</strong> group. Plan now to attend next<br />

year’s Venturing Snow Weekends. Also<br />

any unit large or small can make reservations<br />

to use one of <strong>the</strong> lodges by first<br />

participating in <strong>the</strong> annual w ood cut and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n signing up for a w eekend. Contact<br />

your district executive.<br />

Adventure Trek 2006<br />

The Adventure Trek w ill be held<br />

July 17-22 at <strong>the</strong> Wasco County Fairgrounds<br />

in Tygh Valley, Oregon. Come<br />

bike, hike, raft and canoe in Oregon’s<br />

high desert. Four to six-person teams<br />

w ill compete in fun and exciting events<br />

all w eek.<br />

Venturing age youth 14 to 20 are<br />

eligible to participate − this includes<br />

Varsity Scouts and Boy Scouts w ho are<br />

14 to 20 years old. Co-ed Venturing<br />

crew s are w elcome and encouraged to<br />

Sea Scouts<br />

attend. Each team w ill provide <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

ow n bicycles, backpacking gear and tw o<br />

support adults, and a vehicle to act as a<br />

“sag w agon” for this event. All food,<br />

permits, rafts, and canoes w ill be provided.<br />

Reservations are now being<br />

taken. There is a $50/person deposit<br />

that may be refunded up to May 15. Full<br />

team registration of $175/youth racer<br />

and $75/adult is due by June 17.<br />

A Year of Optimism<br />

The year 2006 promises to be a successful<br />

one for Sea Scouts, that is if things<br />

continue as <strong>the</strong>y have started. Sea<br />

Scouts have just completed one of two<br />

exciting opportunities. The first being<br />

this year’s Sportsman Show Service<br />

Project. Oh, by <strong>the</strong> w ay, it was a<br />

tremendous success. From <strong>the</strong> beginning<br />

crew s w ere eager to take part in<br />

this year’s show and <strong>the</strong>y cheerfully<br />

took turns staffing <strong>the</strong> Sea Scout booth.<br />

One enthusiastic participant w rote “I<br />

thought I could easily take a turn or two<br />

at a booth to support <strong>the</strong> Sea Scout<br />

public service message…hand out<br />

flyers, etc. But, this is not that …it w as<br />

soooo fun. Smiling kids and painted<br />

birds.” The atmosphere at <strong>the</strong> event w as<br />

one of fun and excitement as smiling<br />

kids and painted decoys symbolized <strong>the</strong><br />

positive impact Sea Scouts had on this<br />

show . For those w ho had tw o to three<br />

hours to spare and wanted to spend<br />

<strong>the</strong>m serving, being a part of <strong>the</strong> show<br />

w as a w onderful experience and a great<br />

w ay to earn FOS credit for <strong>the</strong>ir ships.<br />

Included in <strong>the</strong> show w ere more<br />

hands-on things to do like fishing, boating<br />

and hunting. The show also featured<br />

a variety of vendors from as far aw ay as<br />

South Africa and Australia. How ever,<br />

<strong>the</strong> highlight of <strong>the</strong> event w as helping<br />

people learn about Sea Scouts. All in all<br />

it w as a great several days for Sea Scouting.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> end over 250 decoys w ere<br />

painted and $1,500 was raised for FOS.<br />
