This is indeed a special district recognition for those volunteers w ho do everything they can to serve and train youth and fellow leaders. Don’t let this task collect dust – only those leaders w ho are nominated by their peers can be recognized. Camporee − “The Journey Home” − April 28-30 Camporee w ill be held at Pleasant View Farm in Felida, close to home this year. In recognition of the anniversary of Lew is & Clark’s Journey, the district theme is “The Journey Home.” As in year’s past, troops w ill be responsible for hosting the different stations and activities; Dennis Roberts w ill provide some ideas and a sign-up sheet at the next Boy Scout roundtable breakout. Camporee w ill be on the shore of Lake River, w hich opens up the possibilities of canoeing, kayaking, and row ing (be sure to have the proper number of adults trained in Safety Afloat if a troop participates in one of those activities). The approximate cost w ill be $9/ person; it’s a slight decrease from last year due to the low er cost of the site. More details and registration forms w ill be available via the district e-mail distribution list. If you are not on the district e-mail list, sign up w ith Kate Benson at kbenson@cpcbsa.org. For questions or concerns, contact Dennis Roberts at 360.254.9128. Goodwill Day − March 4 Have fun participating in this councilw ide service project to the community. Segments and patches recognizing participation w ill be available at roundtable on March 10 – be sure to bring a roster of the Scouts w ho took part to trade for patches and segments. District E-mail Are you getting all the information you need as a parent and Scout leader? Sign up for the Vancouver District e-mail, w hich is sent out a few times a month. No spam! E-mail addresses are not shared, and the missives are sent out via a blind cc (no “reply to all” option). Everything that’s useful is throw n in. For more information or to subscribe, e-mail kbenson@cpcbsa.org. Spring Membership Drive The future leaders of Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops are parents of youths w ho have not yet joined. New families should be invited to join to continue to have a positive impact in the communities. Imagine, Cub Scouts join in the spring, earn their Bobcat Aw ard, and go to summer camp right aw ay. It’s a w onderful w ay to start the Scouting experience. 32 On a cold, blustery day in February, Soccer and Scouting Pack 945 participated in their first tournament in Gresham. Way to go! Friends of Scouting Your district executive’s driving goal this year is to share the Scouting story w ith every family, and to let them know how the council supports their efforts. The second goal is to get a pledge card from every family, no matter the amount, so there is a record of w ho’s been asked. It’s rescheduled the Saturday after the District Camporee on May 6. 2006 Camp Sign-ups Register units now for the 2006 summer camp season. The camps w ill be opening soon for the one experience that generates the greatest memories and does the most for retention. The Cascade Pacific Council is blessed w ith many w orld-class camping properties, so keep your unit in a council camp. (It’s also the best deal in the entire Pacific Northw est!) Friends of Scouting The district is in the home stretch for reaching its FOS goal. Presidential status can save money on summer camp fees and make short-term camping free during the remainder of the year. This is also the money that buys canoes, hay for horses, pays for full-time rangers at the camps, and all that free leader training. All units are encouraged to complete FOS pledges by the end of March. Help is available. Cub-O-Ree − March 11 All Cub Scouts are invited to this year’s Cub-O-Ree at Scouters’ Mountain. This day-long event w ill offer archery, BB, and a number of other Scoutcraft oriented stations for youth to enjoy. This is also a great opportunity for a Scout to bring a friend to show him how much fun Scouting can be. District Camporee − April 28-30 The fabulous Lew is & Clark spring camporee is coming soon. Last year over 250 Scouts came out for a great w eekend of fun, games, Scout activities, and fellow ship. Those w ho attended had a w onderful time − just ask anyone w ho w as there. It is also a great opportunity to invite some Webelos along to show them how much fun Boy Scout camping can be. This one promises to be better than ever. Let’s double last year’s attendance. The cost is only $9 per person and comes w ith a really neat patch besides all the activities. (Some troops are still needed w ho are w illing to run an activity station.) 33 Webelos-to-Scout Transition Now is a good time for Cubmasters to take Webelos to some local troop meetings to check them out, so they can decide w hat troop they might w ant to join. Membership It’s never too late to run membership events for new Scouts. With summer approaching, a good join night can catch youth. Pack Growth Coordinator It is very important that every pack have a volunteer solely responsible as their Pack Grow th Coordinator. The emphasis of the coordinator w ould be to help the pack grow in membership all year. This person w ould know the community and the schools involved. Their role w ould be to guide the pack in their recruiting methods. Mechelle Labuhn of Pack 100 w ill be glad to help any new coordinators w ith their mission of grow th. There w ill be a district meeting on April 8 for all coordinators.
