interventionstoimprovepatientunderst<strong>and</strong>ingofcomplexmedicalinformationforindividualswithlowhealth<br />

2007 TheHLCstudyreleaseditsfirstresearchreportinMarch2007,Exploring <strong>Cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong> Linguistic Services in the<br />
Nation’s Hospitals: A Report of Findings [12].Thereportprovidedinsightintothechallenges,activities,<strong>and</strong><br />
perspectivesofhospitals<strong>and</strong>containedrecommendationsforhospitals,policymakers,<strong>and</strong>researcherstoimprove<br />
caretodiversepopulations.Findingsarepresentedwithinthecontextofaresearchframework,whichincludesthe<br />
followingdomains:leadership,qualityimprovement<strong>and</strong>datause,workforce,patientsafety<strong>and</strong>provisionofcare,<br />
languageservices,<strong>and</strong>communityengagement.<br />
2007 TheJointCommissionreceivedfundingfromTheCommonwealthFundtoexaminethecharacteristics(for<br />
example,impact,type,causes)ofadverseeventsforLEP<strong>and</strong>English-speakingpatients.Basedonadverseevent<br />
datafromsixJointCommission–accreditedhospitals,LEPpatientsweremorelikelytoexperienceadverseevents<br />
withdetectableharmthanEnglish-speakingpatients.TheadverseeventsexperiencedbyLEPpatientswerealso<br />
morefrequentlycausedbycommunicationerrorsthanforEnglish-speakingpatients.Thisstudywaspublishedin<br />
theFebruary2007International Journal for Quality in Health Care inanarticletitled“Languageproficiency<strong>and</strong><br />
adverseeventsinU.S.hospitals:Apilotstudy”[13].<br />
2008 ThesecondHLCreport,One Size Does Not Fit All: Meeting the Health Care Needs of Diverse Populations,<br />
presentedcurrentpracticesthathospitalsareusingtoprovidecare<strong>and</strong>servicestodiversepatients[14].This<br />
report,releasedinApril2008,includesaself-assessmenttoolthatorganizationscanusetoinitiatediscussions<br />
abouttheirneeds,resources,<strong>and</strong>goalsforprovidingthehighestqualitycaretoeverypatientserved.<br />
2008 In2008,TheJointCommission,withfundingfromTheCommonwealthFund,beganthedevelopmentof<br />
accreditationrequirementsforhospitalstoadvancetheissuesofeffectivecommunication,culturalcompetence,<br />
<strong>and</strong>patient-<strong>and</strong>family-centeredcare.Theprojectwasdesignedtoimprovethesafety<strong>and</strong>qualityofcareforall<br />
patientsthroughnew<strong>and</strong>revisedaccreditationrequirements<strong>and</strong>toinspirehospitalstoadoptpracticespromoting<br />
patient-centeredcommunication.<br />
2009 InOctober2009,TheJointCommission’sSt<strong>and</strong>ards<strong>and</strong>SurveyProceduresCommitteeoftheBoardof<br />
Commissionersapprovednew<strong>and</strong>revisedst<strong>and</strong>ardsforpatient-centeredcommunication.ThenewJoint<br />

2010 TheJointCommissionpublishedamonographtohelphospitalsintegratecommunication,culturalcompetence,<strong>and</strong><br />

2010 TheJointCommissioncontinuestobuilditshealthequitywork,specificallybyconveninganinternalhealthequity<br />
advisorygroup<strong>and</strong>byinitiatingaprojecttounderst<strong>and</strong>howhospitalscanprovidepatient-<strong>and</strong>family-centeredcare<br />
tolesbian,gay,bisexual,<strong>and</strong>transgenderpatients<strong>and</strong>families.ThisworkissupportedbyagrantfromThe<br />
