4. Description of the refurbishment concepts<br />

Existing wall types considered are as follows:<br />

Solid wall (brick, n<strong>at</strong>ural stone)<br />

Sandwich element (concrete panel + concrete panel)<br />

Load bearing wood structure (wooden frame)<br />

Load bearing cavity without insul<strong>at</strong>ion (brick + concrete block)<br />

Insul<strong>at</strong>ed load bearing cavity (concrete block + concrete block)<br />

Non-load bearing cavity (hollow brick + perfor<strong>at</strong>ed brick)<br />

Non-lead bearing concrete block without insul<strong>at</strong>ion (hollow brick + concrete block)<br />

The general refurbishment cases considered are as follows:<br />

1. Concept external insul<strong>at</strong>ion (E) - New outer service with retrofit insul<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

o Case E1 – insul<strong>at</strong>ion fixed without air gap<br />

o Case E2 – insul<strong>at</strong>ion fixed with air gap and wind protection<br />

2. Concept internal insul<strong>at</strong>ion (I) - New inner insul<strong>at</strong>ion with new inner layer<br />

3. Concept cavity wall insul<strong>at</strong>ion (C) – insul<strong>at</strong>ion into cavity<br />

4. Concept replacing renov<strong>at</strong>ion (R) – Old outer layer removed and new layer with<br />

additional insul<strong>at</strong>ion installed<br />

The following text presents the detailed description of renov<strong>at</strong>ion concepts and parameters<br />

The detailed description will include the example of relevant existing wall structures for each<br />

case. The description addresses important characteristics th<strong>at</strong> will be dealt with as parameters<br />

or altern<strong>at</strong>ives.
