4. Description of the refurbishment concepts
Existing wall types considered are as follows:
Solid wall (brick, natural stone)
Sandwich element (concrete panel + concrete panel)
Load bearing wood structure (wooden frame)
Load bearing cavity without insulation (brick + concrete block)
Insulated load bearing cavity (concrete block + concrete block)
Non-load bearing cavity (hollow brick + perforated brick)
Non-lead bearing concrete block without insulation (hollow brick + concrete block)
The general refurbishment cases considered are as follows:
1. Concept external insulation (E) - New outer service with retrofit insulation
o Case E1 – insulation fixed without air gap
o Case E2 – insulation fixed with air gap and wind protection
2. Concept internal insulation (I) - New inner insulation with new inner layer
3. Concept cavity wall insulation (C) – insulation into cavity
4. Concept replacing renovation (R) – Old outer layer removed and new layer with
additional insulation installed
The following text presents the detailed description of renovation concepts and parameters
The detailed description will include the example of relevant existing wall structures for each
case. The description addresses important characteristics that will be dealt with as parameters
or alternatives.
