Economy Financial highlights In 2011, year-over-year total industry operating revenue climbed 7.1 per cent to a record $11.5 billon. There are three components to operating revenue: freight, passenger and other revenue. Other revenue is largely composed of revenue for services provided to passenger and commuter rail companies, as well as switching, demurrage and miscellaneous rentals. The sector also hit a record $9.8 billion in total operating expenses, which includes costs of fuel, equipment maintenance and administrative expenditures. Economy It’s worth noting that while railways increased their overall operating revenue in 2011, they did so offering some of the lowest freight rates in the world.
