Girl in a Barrel Is Attention-Getter
An authentic sta!>ecoach wax used in the
preopening ballyhoo for "The Big Gundown"
when it opened at the Oriental
Theatre in Chicago. A week-long tie-in
with Radio Station WCFL resulted in
the appearance of disc jockey Barney
Pip with the stagecoach as it wended its
way through Chicago's Loop. Richard
Rosenfield of the M & R Theatre Circuit
was also on hand.
For '5 Card Stud' Date in Minneapolis
Minneapolis. Minn., citizens were deall
an extra bonus when Manager Francis Wiggins
set out to promote the booking of Paramount's
"."i Card Stud" for his State Theatre.
Wiggins obtained the services of curvaceous
local model Gwen Gottschacht, had
her clad in a matboard mock-up barrel and
paraded on the city's Nicollet Mall and other
busily traveled areas displaying a sign that
read: "Lost all my clothes playing 5 Card
Stud at the State Theatre."
Gwen didn't have any trouble attracting
attention. She turned out to be a traffic
stopper. Pedestrians had the edge though,
as they were given a chance to cut cards
with the model. A pass to the movie was the
reward for anyone cutting an ace.
In the evenings, Gwen changed into
casino gal's garb reminiscent of the era po
trayed in "5 Card Stud" and stationed he
self in front of the theatre where she spi
an old-style raffle wheel for patrons ar
non-patrons alike. Winning slots were awared
either a free pass or deck of cards. Tl
cards were obtained through a tie-in wi
a local firm.
Minn., street white promoting the booking
of "Five Card Stud" at the State
Theatre. Anyone cutting an ace got a
free pa.^s to see the movie. The stunt
was the brainchild of Francis Wiggins,
manager of the State.
Roheit H. Butler, managing director of Redstone Theatres, and Carmen Miele. his
assistant, struck it rich when they set out to promote 20th Century-Fox's "Doctor
Dolittte" playdate at their Showcase Cinemas at Lawrence, Mass. They lined up a
store chain which purchased tickets for the feature to give their customers. This
"Doctor Dolittle" doll display in one of the stores is a result of the deal. The store
offered a free ticket to anyone purchasing one of the dolls. The pair also plugged the
playdate with co-operative newspaper advertising, radio plugs, window and counter
displays, announcements over the stores' public address systems, music from the
film over the same systems and theatre lobby displays.
