Taynor off to Holy Cross
Standing between his mother, Cherri (St. Charles Alumni and
Development Offices assistant), and father, Randy Taynor, is very
happy alumnus, Don ’05. He is now studying at Holy Cross College
in Notre Dame, Indiana.
2004
Joseph “Josh” Ebrahimian,
who is a sophomore at The Ohio
State University majoring in political
science, spent the summer
as an intern for state representative
Scott Oelslager of the 51 st
Disrict. “I enjoy the size and diversity
of the university,” Josh
commented. “It’s literally a city
with many types of people from
the entire world.” He hopes to
work for a foundation to help
others and serve the community.
Recalling his teachers at St.
Charles, Josh said they all were
very influential and talented and
“all should be recognized for
their dedication and commitment
to St. Charles and its tradition of
excellence.” Among those who
were most influential: Mrs.
Amnah, Mrs. Haas, and Mrs.
Pena.
“Mrs. Amnah spent countless
hours helping me understand
algebra and honors geometry,”
Josh said. “She never complained
about helping me and she
explained problems thoroughly.
I will never forget (her) tremendous
patience with me.” He described
Mrs. Haas, his sophomore
religion teacher, as “very
spiritual and straightforward.
She always had a positive attitude
and listened to what I had
to say.” About Mrs. Pena, his
German teacher, Josh said: “I
really enjoyed her upbeat attitude.
She was dedicated to
teaching, was a clear and precise
teacher (and) had a very
worldly attitude that has benefited
me in college. She was
very considerate; whenever
someone had a question, she
would go out of her way to explain.”
2003
John C. Duffy is in his junior
year at the University of Notre
Dame working on a double major
in economics and computer
applications. He’s on ND’s varsity
lacrosse team that this summer
traveled to Prague to play
the Czech Republic’s national
team. His Irish team put on a lacrosse
clinic to teach Czech
children how to play. They spent
10 days there training and
sightseeing and took trips to
Moravia, Vienna, and Prague.
Duffy said the team toured
castles, cathedrals, chateaus,
and a former Nazi concentration
camp.
“All around it was an amazing
experience,” said Duffy, whose
team won two national championships
the last three years. He
wears jersey #32 and plays
defense (more specifically as a
long-pole midfielder).
John A. Siefert is enrolled in
the welding engineering program
at The Ohio State University
and interned with the State
of Ohio in engineering-related
work during the last year. He
reports his younger brother,
Stephen, is a freshman this year
at St. Charles.
“I have great satisfaction,”
Siefert said, “that even after two
full years of being exposed in
college to a huge array of diversity
and numerous kinds of
people, my best friends are still
the ones that I went to school
with at St. Charles. I have been
told by my parents and others
that you meet your lifelong
friends in college, but the men at
St. Charles have the unique opportunity
to find lasting friendships
in high school, and I am
proud to say that I took advantage
of this, as did many others
that I know and keep in contact
with.” .
Siefert said his St. Charles education
prepared him better for
college than many in his engineering
classes. “I am extremely
Another Heller graduate
The Hellers celebrated the graduation last June of another family
member — John H. From left, his father, John, grandmother, Alice,
St. Charles principal Dominic J. Cavello, grandfather, John H.
“Jack” Heller Sr., and mother, Liz. Other Heller alumni are uncles
Jim ’83 and Paul ’82.
lucky that St. Charles taught me
not only to write, but write extremely
well. I have never once
struggled with my grammar or
writing skills here at Ohio State
in English or engineering
classes. Because of this, I have
been able to take the leadership
role in many group projects.” He
said his best college grade came
in an English course, due in large
part to the English teachers at
St. Charles – “to whom I remain
extremely grateful.”
2002
Mark Blackstone is at
Kalamazoo College in
Kalamazoo, Mich. “I wish that
more St. Charles students would
have the opportunity to learn
about my college and the wonderful
experiences I have had. It
is an excellent school to go to
after St. Charles.” Blackstone
last April returned from eight
months of traveling in Quito, Ecuador
and San Jose, Costa Rica.
“It was an amazing learning experience,”
he said.
Musical memories
BJ Yurkovich ’05 wears the “Bishop Fulcher Memorial Award”
medal awarded to him at his St. Charles graduation last June. The
annual Fulcher Award recognizes a St. Charles senior who has
Yurkovich played in the jazz and concert bands all four years at
St. Charles. He now is double majoring in computer science and
