8 Columbus Hall of Fame F enrolls coach Jack Ryan T he staid halls of Columbus City Hall took on a festive glow last May 11 th when the name of one of Central Ohio’s best-known and most revered high school coaches and teachers – Jack Ryan – was enrolled in the Columbus Hall of Fame. Baptized John Thomas Ryan in 1916, but better known as “Jack Ryan,” or simply “Jack,” or “coach,” and to an older generation as “J.R.” and to many as “Mr. Ryan,” he devoted more than a half century of his life coaching athletic teams and teaching in classrooms, first at St. Charles Preparatory School and then at Bishop Hartley High School. Some 200 admirers joined together to celebrate the special occasion of adding the name of Jack Ryan to other Columbus Hall of Fame luminaries who include World War I flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker, famed humor writer James Thurber, major league baseball star Hank Gowdy, one-time commander of the Strategic Air Command Gen. Curtis Le May, former Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes, and Notre Dame football all-American Jack Cannon, who 70 years ago recommended to St. Charles the hiring of Ryan as coach. In Columbus City Hall chambers were many St. Charles alumni from a past generation and some from more recent times, Hartley alumni, other admirers, and the many members of the Ryan family – children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Master of ceremony for the event was Hugh J. Dorrian, Class of 1953, who has been Columbus city auditor for 37 years. It was Dorrian, who a year earlier nominated the admission of Ryan to the city’s hall of Adoring husband Jack Ryan, shown with his wife of 51 years, Elaine. By Louis V. Keynote speaker (see related story) for the event was Tom O’Leary, Class of 1964, who was football captain under Ryan and went on to play on the University of Notre Dame’s national football championship team of 1966. Among those participating in the festivities were Mayor Michael Coleman, Bob Telerski ’58; Mike Mentel, Thomas P. Byrne, and Dr. John T. Ryan, the honored coach’s grandson. Msgr. Kenneth Grimes, Class of 1949, who played on Ryan-coached baseball teams at St. Charles, now pastor of Our Lady of Peace, gave the invocation. As a tribute to Ryan’s service in the Coast Guard during World War II, the St. Charles Chorus under the direction of Johnny Steiner sang the stirring Semper Paratus (Always Ready), the Coast Guard Anthem, and God Bless America. Adding pomp and circumstance to the event was the Columbus Police and Fire Pipes and Drums and the Columbus Fire Honor Guard presented the colors. An informal reception, during which cookies and beverages were served, and when many alumni compared notes with each other, concluded the happy event. Ryan was positive influence, O’L ’Lear eary says “He made a positive difference in so many lives,” observed Tom O’Leary, Class of 1964, who delivered the keynote address at the induction last May 11of coach Jack Ryan in the Columbus Hall of Fame in Columbus City Hall. “His induction,” O’Leary said, “is so appropriate,” an opinion shared by so many, who knew John T. Ryan. The legendary high school coach and teacher, who died in 1996 at the age of 80, began his career at St. Charles in 1936 where he remained until 1964 when he left the school as it was being converted to a seminary prep and about to discontinue interscholastic sports. He spent the next 25 years coaching and teaching at Bishop Hartley. O’Leary described Ryan as “my mentor and my hero,” whose “list of accomplishments and awards are incredible.” O’Leary said he was honored to represent St. Charles for Ryan’s Hall of Fame induction, and that Ryan “was a positive influence on so many people in so many ways.” A great number of those, he noted, have today reached positions of influence and leadership. O’Leary starred on Ryan-coached football teams at St. Charles in the early 1960s. In 1962 he scored all three touchdowns in the Cardinal’s memorable 20-14 upset of the powerhouse Bishop Watterson Eagles that earned St. Charles the first football championship awarded by the Central Catholic League. In the 1963 season, O’Leary sparked St. Charles by scoring 136 points, tops of all Franklin County players. Recruited to play for Notre Dame University by famed coach Ara Parseghian, O’Leary was a starter on ND’s 1966 national championship team. In his talk at the Hall of Fame induction of Ryan, O’Leary said he’s often asked what it was like to be on that Notre Dame team. “My usual response,” he said is that “I am one of the luckiest people because I was so well prepared by St. Charles and Mr. Ryan.” Recalling that poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once advised “hitch your wagon to a star,” O’Leary continued: “We did just that with Mr. Ryan. May our children and grandchildren have that same type of Mr. Ryan in the classroom that I had.” St. Charles Preparatory School
