each class with Father B., I always
checked that my top button
was buttoned and my cravat
was straight. This daily ritual
instilled in me the importance of
being prepared and the power it
provides in achieving a particular
goal. Whether a test in college,
a meeting with my boss, or
a family debate — the better prepared
I am as I enter the situation,
he made during his time at
St. Charles. “When you graduate
and later in life, when you
come across alumni, there is always
that feeling that you are
part of a very special society,
unlike any other school. It’s a
proud feeling to respond to the
question of where you attended
high school, to be able to respond:
Columbus St. Charles,”
he said.
1984
Ethan Dicks is still with the University
of Wisconsin, as was
reported in the Spring 2004 Cardinal
magazine. He returned
from the North Pole last January,
and is scheduled to go back
for a 13-month stint for his third
winter and fifth deployment
there in 11 years.
This time, though, rather than just
running the old neutrino detector,
AMANDA, he’ll help to construct
Ice Cube, the world’s largest
scientific instrument. With
one string of sensors in the ice
at present (out of an eventual
60), the research group hopes
to install 8 to 12 more strings this
austral summer, bringing up to
4800 individual sensors arrayed
over a cubic kilometer. The new
detector will be 50 times as large
as the present detector, and will
have an operational lifetime measured
in decades.
”It’s a state job,” he said, “but
the pay is OK. What’s more important
is how exciting the work
is. One of the best things about
this trip is that I’ll be helping to
construct the largest scientific
instrument on the planet, with an
expected useful life of at least
40 years. Even the old detector
is interesting; it was declared the
“weirdest telescope in the
world” last year. Never a dull
moment!” Visit http://
1983
post-baccalaureate studies in
biology and chemistry at the
University of Louisville (1993-
1995) and earned a masters in
teaching from the University of
my life as well as the lives of the
hundreds (or is it thousands?)
of his students that he has
taught through the years,” Carr
said.
”A highlight for me at St.
Charles,” Carr said, “was forging
the close relationships that I
had with Doug Montgomery,
Fred Smith, and all those who
were involved in the 12 theatre
productions in which I participated.
The most important relationship
that was fostered at St.
Charles, however, was the one
with Jesus Christ. I can’t imagine
my life today without the
strong Christian foundation that
was forged during my four years
there.”
Louis J. Fabro, and his wife,
Susan, welcomed son Louis
Alexander to the family on June
15, 2005. “Alex” has an older
sister, Megan (3) and looks forward
to graduating from St.
Charles during its Centenial Celebration
in 2023- joining his
(Louis J. ’83) and uncles
proud alumni.
been married for 19 years and
has three children ages 5 to14.
He uses his free time golfing,
fishing, investing in the stock
market, gardening, and
barbequing.
Bals also is a trustee of the
Germania Singing and Sport Society.
One of his special memories
of St. Charles is meeting
Stephen Schneider ’81 in 1981,
at the Germania Club, where the
two serve as trustees. He is a
former club champion at
Oakhurst Country Club.
