cafeteria.
Student Commons Naming
Class of 1963 alumnus Bob Walter and his
wife Peggy, a St. Mary of the Springs
Academy alumna, initiated Phase II of the
Campaign for Saint Charles with a naming
gift for the new student commons, which is
being named in honor of Bob’s father, the
late Robert C. Walter. Mr. Walter was a
staunch believer in the traditions and
educational philosophy of St. Charles. The
Robert C. Walter Student Commons is the
vision and original architectural plan of
1963 St. Charles alumnus Bob Corna, who
like his classmate Walter, felt a common
gathering space was the one thing missing
from their St. Charles experience. The
15,000-sq.-ft. Walter Student Commons
will be used by every St. Charles student,
every day of the school year and will be
made available to the public for special
events on a first-come first serve basis. The
west entrance to the Walter Student
Commons will also feature new colonnades,
which are one of the school’s distinctive
architectural features.
Ground Floor Naming
Thanks to a generous donation from
locally-owned Donatos Pizza and its
founder and chairman, James E. “Jim”
Grote, the school will relocate its kitchen
and cafeteria to the ground floor of the
new Student Services & Fine Arts Center.
The Donatos Pizza Kitchen will be utilized
by every student, every day of the school
year. Donatos Pizza will also serve as the
school’s official caterer for on-campus
athletic and extra-curricular events. Jim
Grote is a graduate of Aquinas College
High School and is the father of Thomas
J. Grote, a member of the St. Charles
Class of 1982.
Second Floor Naming
Thanks to a $250,000 pledge from the
Younkin Family, the second floor of the
Student Services & Fine Arts Center will
house the Younkin Family Student Success
Center, which will promote afterschool
tutoring and counseling. A similar
tutoring and life-skills guidance center
provided by the Younkin Family exists at
The Ohio State University. The leadership
pledge from the Younkins is based on the
family’s long-time affiliation with St.
Charles and local charitable causes: Ron
and Linda Younkin, owners of Greenlawn
Homes in Columbus, are the parents of
two St. Charles alumni, Ronald L.
Younkin, Class of 1989, of South Lyon,
Mich., and Brett E. Younkin, Esq., Class of
1996, of Columbus, and Brian P. Younkin,
a 1991 Bishop Watterson alumnus. The
family gift also pays tribute to St. Charles
alumni Robert M. Benjamin, Class of
1987, and Raymond M. Benjamin, Class of
1991. The family matriarch, Mrs. M. Irene
Younkin, is active in charitable causes in
Columbus and nearby Ashville, Oh. In
addition to the after-school tutoring
center, the Younkin Family Success Center
will house a student lounge; a campus
ministry office; a large conference room; a
college and university resource library; a
computer lab; four counseling rooms; a
nurse’s office; and a reception area.
Main Building Entryway Naming
Thanks to a $100,000 gift from the Steve
Savko Family and the Marty Savko Family
in honor of the Savko Family matriarch
and patriarch, Nickolas and Gilda Savko,
The Savko Family Entryway will provide a
new entrance from the school’s main
hallway into the new Walter Student
Commons. To make way for the new
entrance, the school receptionist office and
the bookkeeper’s office will be demolished
and will be relocated to the old Guidance
Office area. The Guidance area will be
relocated on the second floor of the new
Student Services & Fine Arts Center. The
centerpiece of the Savko Entryway will be
the three arched stained glass windows
that are located in the alcove of the main
entrance. Marble statues of the Blessed
Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph will be
dedicated to the Savko Family matriarch
and patriarch, Nickolas and Gilda Savko.
The statues will be located at the entryway
in close proximity to new glass doors that
will be installed on both sides of the
stained glass windows.
Nurse’s Office
A pledge from The Mason Family, has
made possible the Nurse Betsy Mason
Room, which will house the school-nurse’s
office at St. Charles. Mrs. (Postlewaite)
Mason, a graduate of St. Mary of the
Springs Academy and St. Louis University
College of Nursing, has been the school
nurse at St. Charles for 22 years. Her
compassion, care and concern for the young
men at St. Charles, and the school’s faculty
and staff, makes Mrs. Mason’s contributions
to her fellow man unmatched in the
area and the state. The Nurse Betsy Mason
Room will be located on the second floor of
the Student Services & Fine Arts Center.
Campus Ministry Office
A pledge from The Robert W. Horner III
’79 Family will honor his parents by
creating The Robert and Jane Horner
Campus Ministry Office. The office will
house the school’s religion faculty. The
office will also focus on outreach and
service projects for St. Charles students.
Student Lounge
A $25,000 pledge from 1979 St. Charles
alumnus David L. Pemberton Jr., and his
family, will honor longtime St. Charles
English faculty member Ann Cobler with
the naming of the Ann Cobler Student
Lounge. Mrs. Cobler, who joined the St.
Charles faculty in 1977, was the recipient
of the 2004 St. Charles Principal’s Award
for Leadership and Service and the 1988
Distinguished Teaching Award from the
Diocese of Columbus. Mrs. Cobler has
taught English at all four levels during her
28 years at St. Charles and takes great
pride in preparing juniors for their PSAT
and Advance Placement scores. The
student lounge will be located on the second
floor of the Student Services & Fine Arts
Center and will offer students a “place of
their own” when assembling for college
admissions-officer visits as well as a place
to review college admissions materials
retrieved from the nearby college resource
stacks.
Conference Room
Pledges and gifts from the school’s current
Advisory Board has led to the naming of
the St. Charles Advisory Board Emeritus
Conference Room. A permanent roster
inside the conference room will honor
those members who have been granted
