NITRA Region
General Information
The region is situated in the south of Slovakia. Its major part consists of
lowland Podunajská nížina. Only at the north of the region there are hills
Štiavnické vrchy. The River Danube forms the southern border of the region.
Other important rivers irrigating its fertile soil comprise the most important
ECONOMY
The Nitra region can be classified as industrial –
agricultural one.
Thanks to its geographical and climatic conditions
the region has always been oriented at agriculture
and industries complementary to it. Only after
the Second World War its character started to
change. At the present time there are almost all
the sectors of industry concentrated in major
towns of the region. Regional GDP at market
prices in 2000 amounted 11,53% of the whole
GDP in Slovakia.
STRUCTURE OF THE INDUSTRY
There are three main sectors in the region –
pulp and paper, chemistry and engineering. These
represent about 90% of its export (especially
due to the chemistry) and about 80% of its
production. The distribution of the industries is
specific because it creates the towns’ homogenous
character. For example Sala is home to chemistry,
Komarno to engineering (shipbuilding), Tlmace
to machinery. Just the region’s center Nitra has
markedly diversified structure of industry.
Electronic Industry has not had an important
role in the region. Establishment of several jointventures
and subsidiaries of foreign companies
had increased its share. The most important
enterprises are Volkswagen and Siemens.
