BRATISLAVA Region<br />

General Information<br />

<strong>Bratislava</strong> region is the smallest of all the Slovakia’s regions but it is far from<br />

being the least important. It is made up by Podunajská nížina and Záhorská<br />

nížina lowlands separated by the Little Carpathian Mountains. The important<br />

geographical feature is the river Danube, which bounds the region from the<br />

south and the river Morava which bounds it from the west.<br />

While many regions claim a strategic location, <strong>Bratislava</strong> is a genuine central<br />

European crossroad with borders on the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary.<br />

From other regions the only one having common border with <strong>Bratislava</strong> is<br />

Trnava region. Important ethnic minorities are Hungarians 5,2% and Czechs 2%.<br />

The regional center <strong>Bratislava</strong>, capital of The Slovak Republic, is also the seat of<br />

national government and various organizations of nation-wide importance.<br />

ECONOMY<br />

As a result of its location, the region <strong>Bratislava</strong><br />

has managed to develop into the economically<br />

most important region of the Slovakia.<br />

The industry of the region comprises all the<br />

sectors. Noteworthy fact concerning its<br />

distribution within region is its high concentration<br />

degree. In <strong>Bratislava</strong> almost 70% of all the<br />

employees in industry finds their job. The south<br />

of the region specializes in the industries with<br />

complementary character to agriculture.<br />

The <strong>Bratislava</strong> region has the biggest share on the<br />

gross domestic product (23,6%).<br />

STRUCTURE OF THE INDUSTRY<br />

Main sectors of the industry in the region<br />

are Chemistry, Automotive, Engineering,<br />

Electrotechnic and Food processing. These sectors<br />

can use strong advantages of the region –<br />

high educational level, developed transport and<br />

technical infrastructure, active foreign trade,<br />

highest home demand for goods and services.<br />

Despite of this fact, <strong>Bratislava</strong> is the first Slovak<br />

region, where the industry sector plays much less<br />

important role as the trade and services.<br />

FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT<br />

IN THE REGION<br />

<strong>Bratislava</strong> region obtains more than 60% of<br />

the FDI in Slovakia, mainly due to very good<br />

access, developed infrastructure and skilled and<br />

qualified labour force. There are the biggest<br />

foreign investors in Slovakia. This is especially true<br />

in the field of trade and services, where most of<br />

the investors are in <strong>Bratislava</strong>.<br />

The volume of FDI has reached to 3 Q 2001 the<br />

amount of 2805,70 € (59,3%).<br />
