LABOR MARKET
Presov is one of the regions most seriously stricken by unemployment. This might be, however, an advantage for foreign investors, due to the supply of cheap
workforce and possible higher subsidies from the Labour Office for every newly created job.
Out of the entire population, 24,8% are in pre-productive and 13,3% in post-productive age. The share of university-educated persons is 8.5%.
TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURE
The region has relatively well-developed railway
and road networks. There is one international
airport in Poprad, used for charter flights. The
regional centre Presov is 40 km away from the
second most important airport of Slovakia in
Kosice.
The region is covered by a relatively dense road
network consisting of highways and international
roads, as well as local roads. The total length of
class I roads and highways is 560 and 13.5km,
respectively. Two main routes, one in the westeast
direction (Zilina-Kosice-Ukraine) and the
second in the north-south direction (Poland-
Presov-Kosice-Hungary) form the skeleton of the
railway system.
The providers of telephone services are Slovenské
Telekomunikácie – fixed phones, Eurotel and
Globtel – mobile phones. Telecommunication
services are unified throughout Slovakia. The
prices of gas and electricity are also the same in
the whole of Slovakia.
The prices of water supply and sewage are
independent and vary between individual districts.
In Prešov, the price of water supply is 23.00 Sk
per m 3 and the price of sewage 17.00Sk per m 3
(12/2001). The mentioned prices are exclusive of
10% VAT.
EDUCATION AND UNIVERSITIES
There are more than 480 elementary schools and
125 secondary schools in the region.
The educational centre of the region is the town
of Presov, with the faculties of two universities –
the newly established University of Presov and
the Technical University Kosice.
