ŽILINA Region<br />
General Information<br />
The Zilina region is situated in the northern part of Slovakia. It is prevailingly of<br />
mountainous character made up by ranges of mountains the West Tatras, The<br />
Giant and the Little Fatra. Population is concentrated in the valleys of major<br />
regional rivers – the Váh, the Orava and the Turiec.<br />
The region is neighbouring with Czech Republic and Poland. It has also borders<br />
with three other Slovakia’s regions Trencin, Banska Bystrica and Presov. Its<br />
population is homogenous form from 98% by Slovaks and 1,2% by Czechs.<br />

ECONOMY<br />
The Zilina region can be considered as industrial<br />
one. It is because of two facts, its location in<br />
proximity of industrial areas of neighboring Czech<br />
Republic and Poland and also lack of fertile<br />
soil. Industry represents 72% of its year turnover.<br />
It includes all the sectors and is rather equally<br />
distributed. Generally its export orientation is<br />
rather low with exception of Ružomberok and<br />
Žilina districts.<br />
Regional GDP at market prices in 2000 amounted<br />
10.71% of the whole GDP in Slovakia.<br />
STRUCTURE OF THE INDUSTRY<br />
The most productive companies of the region<br />
are focused in production of wood, pulp, paper<br />
and products made from them. Another three<br />
industry sectors are Metallurgy, relatively the<br />
biggest export sector, Engineering and Electronics.<br />
Alike the other regions the construction with 13%<br />
share on turnover is very strong in Zilina.<br />
Electronics industry has a relatively high share<br />
in the region. Its importance is growing thanks<br />
to investment activities of foreign investors.<br />
Significant concentration of its production is in<br />
Liptovsky Hradok, Nizna and Trstena.<br />

FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT<br />
IN THE REGION<br />
The location of the region, near the border of<br />
industrial areas of Czech republic and Poland,<br />
give it the potential and opportunity for close<br />
co operational relations with foreign producers.<br />
It also increases its attractiveness for foreign<br />
investors. The volume of FDI has reached to<br />
3Q.2001 the amount of 213,65 € (4,5%).<br />
Remarkable fact about the structure of foreign<br />
investment is relatively high share of Czech<br />
capital.<br />
