Course Requirements:<br />

Transcripts will be evaluated against the following list of required<br />

courses in physical education. Guidelines from the National<br />

Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) are used<br />

to determine courses that students take in either graduate or<br />

undergraduate school. <strong>The</strong> M.A.T. in Physical Education will require<br />

forty-two (42) hours. Each student is assigned an advisor from the<br />

School of Education and from <strong>The</strong> Department of Health, Exercise,<br />

& Sport Science. Both advisors will examine transcripts and develop<br />

a program of study for each student.<br />

HESS-620 Professional Internship (6 hours)<br />

<strong>The</strong> Professional Internship requires that a minimum of sixty (60) full<br />

days be spent in the schools, and during the Professional Internship,<br />

it will not be possible for the teacher candidate to take any additional<br />

courses.<br />

*Undergraduate and graduate transcripts may be evaluated for application<br />

to coursework in the program.<br />

Field Experiences:<br />

Many education courses require field experiences that vary from<br />

course to course and are related to specific course objectives. All<br />

field experiences provide opportunities for Master’s candidates to<br />

develop pedagogical knowledge and skills. At a minimum, teacher<br />

candidates are expected to successfully complete 75 hours of field<br />

experiences prior to the Professional Internship that is an additional<br />

sixty (60) days.<br />

Course Descriptions:<br />

HESS-505—Motor Development and Motor Learning<br />

Three Credit Hours<br />

This course provides the study of appropriate learning and<br />

development theories, and heredity and environmental factors that<br />

influence human performance.<br />

HESS-525—Scientific Principles of Physical Education, Health,<br />

Exercise, & Sport Science<br />

Three Credit Hours<br />

This course introduces students to the study of effects of exercise,<br />

physical activity, and work on various physical fitness components, as<br />

well as analysis of the human body in motion, sports objects in motion,<br />

and forces acting upon animate and inanimate objects/bodies.<br />

Prerequisite: A biology, chemistry, or physics course and two human<br />

anatomy and/or physiology courses.<br />

HESS-527—Content & Methods of Teaching School Health<br />

Education & Health-Related Aspects of Physical Fitness<br />

Three Credit Hours<br />

This course updates content knowledge and prepares students in<br />

teaching styles, methodologies, and assessment techniques for health<br />

education curricula in K-12 schools.<br />

Prerequisite: A health and wellness course or passing a departmental<br />

competency exam.<br />

HESS-528—Content & Methods of Teaching Rhythmic<br />

Activities & Movement Education<br />

Three Credit Hours<br />

This course teaches content and prepares students in teaching<br />

methodologies for fundamental rhythmic activities and movement<br />

education in grades K-12, including basic locomotor skills, creative<br />

rhythmic activities, dances (traditional, folk, square, social, line),<br />

and aerobics. Additional emphasis is placed on candidate skill<br />

development in dance and basic gymnastics.<br />

Prerequisite: HESS 550 or permission of the instructor.<br />

HESS-533—Content & Methods of Teaching Elementary School<br />

Physical Education<br />

Three Credit Hours<br />

This course teaches content and theoretical and practical study of<br />

teaching progressively graded programs of activities for elementary<br />

school students, grades K-5.<br />

Prerequisite: HESS 550 or permission of the instructor.<br />

HESS-534—Accommodating Persons with Disabilities in Sport<br />

& Physical Activity<br />

Three Credit Hours<br />

This course provides the study of legal, ethical, and practical<br />

definitions of involving people with disabilities in physical activity,<br />

physical education, and sport settings.<br />

HESS-535—History, Philosophy, and Curriculum of Physical<br />

Education<br />

Three Credit Hours<br />

This course introduces students to the historical and philosophical<br />

roots of physical education and examines the degree to which<br />
